Here we go again.

Bought 320gig high speed usb hard drive thing to back-up everything cause my pc has the flu and is slooooooow.
Thought I'd save things before it dies.

Its called a 'Lacie little disc 2,0 . Its sexy in shiney black. looks like the obelisk on 2001

Anyhoo, its installed.
Tried to back up everything at one go. 25 gigabites I think ?
Told me it would take almost 3 hours .. then started copying.

It stopped after 15 mins and 8 gigs ... The error report said something about a limit on fat32 systems (or something like that).

Is there anything stupid wotIhavedid?

Apologies if its obvious ... but at least Ive had a go at it.

Thankyou for any assistance. :thumb2

you have a file bigger than 4 gig fat 32 doesn't allow files bigger than that size..... i think

maybe you could format your new drive to NTFS instead of fat32

i could be wrong about all this... you need to ask Steptoe to be sure

It's the in built porn filter kicking in, you need to disable it it preferences :thumb2

What OS are you using - XP or Vista or something else?

What software are you using to "back up" your files?

Tuned is probably right in that the Lacie is formatted as Fat32

Right Mouse click on the Lacie drive in windows explorer and select Properties - it will show the File System.

It needs to be NTFS - assuming there is nothing on the Lacie you want to keep, Right Mouse click on the Lacie drive and select Format - choose NTFS, allocation unit size: Default, Quick Format will be ok

Then try running your backup again.

The above all sounds correct and sensible but only if Den has a file over 4gb......

(Den, pay attention, that's gb as in giant biscuits)

I find it hard to believe he has.....don't forget this is a home PC rather than a work server in high end graphics etc.....you could in theory make a file bigger than that by ripping a dvd in top quality AVI format but the processor/ram wouldn't have coped with it.....How on earth has he managed to get more than 4 giant biscuits on his machine?? :nenau

Unless it's a folder rather than a file ??

Definitely worth a go, formatting in NTFS though :thumb2

I'd assumed that the software he was using to backup was creating one big file, many giant biscuits in size, and had managed to cram 8 of them from the PC into the Lacie single file, when it reached 4GB and blew up :nenau

Most decent backup software breaks the giant biscuits into smaller,multi-mb (multi pack sized mini-biscuit ) files but if Den's doesn't, you may well be right. :thumb2

As we all know, there are may many thousands of bites in a giant biscuit, so the mini-biscuit version are far easier to handle :)

fat32 is just the lowest common denominator in the filesystem realm.
Just reinitialize the disk with the right one for the intended use.

That's for everyone elses benefit not Fanum, he is a technical retard who only ever breaks all things computer cos he refuses to accept his shortcomings and just carries on fekkin with shite :D

STEP AWAY FROM THE CHRISTMAS SHERRY!!!!

that would be so much more disparaging if windows machines read mac formatted drives :augie

Windows users know there's not enough of interest going on in the brains or lives of the red glasses-wearing mac fashionistas darling that their HD's are worth reading ;)

:popcorn in a nerd kinda way !

Is it nerds for PC's and Geek's for MAC's ?? Or the other way around/about??

FWIW I'm a PC and a MAC and I like LINUX too what does that make me? A TWAT ??

:popcorn

No, it's normal people on PC's Red-rimmed glasses wearing trendy fashion victims with more money than sense who can't use more than one finger at a time on Macs and nerds on Linux :D

Thank all for their info.
I think I have managed to cram all the required biscuits into the wee box. All 29 giggybites are hopefully nestling comfortably within.

After two hours they had all shuffled across without any fuss ..... but at the end , the windaes box appears and it tells me to insert diskette? into the slot so that all this stuff can be written to the disc.
Now, I had already told the little shit that I had the hard drive thingy plugged into the D/ usb hole.
I looked into 'disc management and ..sure enough .. It tells me that there is the requisite 28 giggys residing within.

Presumably ????, I just plug the box into my spare computer and all the stuff can be moved to their new home.

Its not as easy as that I hear you say. Is that man totally stupid ?

Well ... to tell you the truth ... when it comes to computers ... yes !!
A man can only store so much knowledge. My personal hard drive is full of useful information, and there is precious little space left for this stuff.

So .... If you dont hear from me for a while, you will know whats happened.

TO INFINITY ..... AND BEYOND.
