and this as well...
Woefully slow.
I've looked in the Task Manager and there are over 50 processes running which I'm sure is far too many. How do I know which ones to stop?

I do all the usual things like run CCleaner and Ad-Aware & Spyware, plus defragmenting but it's just getting worse.

How me fixum? :nenau

Run Crap cleaner (CCleaner) select Tools -Start up and if there are any programs in the list that start with Google ie. google toolbar or google update notifier delete them from the list, like wise for Adobe, iTunes, QuickPlayer, microsoft office, apple, nero, and Realplayer, they're the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Another one, Nokia phone suite or substitute that with what ever phone suite you might have installed

Last time I checked mine had 47 running and I was assurred that was normal.....so I just checked my new PC and there are 60 running.....

:nenau

Mines on a wing and a prayer, I may need to upgrade from Dune OS to Harry Potter

Just checked mine and it says 66 running, they don't appear to be affecting performance much.

I've only got 12 programs in 'start up' though.

Start up programs

....same here - kids have all sorts on the pc , but I wish there was a list for stuff that should be there on start up , then I would confidently remove all the rest .

Are you running low on hard drive space?
If you're using IE or such like, try closing all the extra "toolbars" that have been downloaded and are running.... in my experience, they have been known to cause all sorts of wierd problems, that disappear when I close them all down.. flippin junk!!!

This is normal for Windows, it happens because Windows is sh*t - simples.

The only guaranteed way of speeding it up is to re-install Windows from scratch, it will be a zillion times faster to begin with and then gradually slow down again as you use the computer and it starts to fill up with crap.

Been through this several times over the years, the experts at work even find this a pain, they can do it, but it takes them much longer than it does to restore Windows from scratch!

Live with it or buy a Mac. :D

I had (still got) a Mac, that got so slow and unusable that I bought a PC.
The only reason I've still got the Mac is because there's lots of photo's on there that I can't transfer to the PC because the Mac is so shite.

The machine in general or when browsing?

Have you recently updated your anti virus, the default setting for some is to check everything each time you as much as fart.

I have 68 process running here and it's fine.
