Do a search for "procexp" in Google. It's a piece of software that enables you to monitor what is really running (rather than what task manager says is running)
I can confidently assure you that AVG just running in 'background monitoring' mode isn't particularly memory hungry. I used it on my W98SE with only 128Mb Ram with no probs, however....W98SE DID suffer horribly from memory drain, particularly from OE and IE. Even when not in use these applications refused to give used memory back for processing much else and I had frequent BSOD episodes until I increased the ram to 512Mb. This wasn't entirely satisfactory though, as W98SE (and prob WinME too ) Don't handle memory usage as efficiently as XP.
I would guess that the PSION Synchroniser would be a fairly memory hungry interface.
Right, its confirmed. I'm losing my marbles. I have of course already put Procexp on. It is indeed useful for seeing what is running but can't (on Me) give the memory usage of each application.
Thanks for the AVG info which confirms what I suspected. Psion Sync isn't too bad actually. What is confusing me though is that the computer was absolutely fine for 2 to 3 years running far more than it does now. After the reformat & reinstall, the programs I bothered to put back on are the same as before except for AVG. The only other bits which I can't remember if they were on there before the problem or not are the Wireless PCMCIA card and the Palm synchroniser (or whatever it is). Ho Hum.
Keep the ideas coming and I'll store them up for a blitz over Xmas and see if I can crack it.
The wireless PCIMCA card will prob use quite a bit of process power, at least it seems to do so on my friend's laptop.
It may also be worthwhile checking the processor fan, and the heatsink for dust clogging...this also drags down the processor.
