I seem to have picked up a virus or trojan horse from an active x object, or so my computer tells me, I am currently running an AVG scan, set on the highest (slowest setting) (2008 version), my question is how deep is the scan and is there anything that I can do to resolve the problem.
Also in the security center, the automatic update will not update and is swiched off despite me going into the services page and trying to update it.
Windows xp.
Thanks in advance.
Just noticed three icons on desk top for spyware protection, and the internet explorer automatically goes to a antivirus/spyware website which is realy difficult to get out of.

Do you have any anti spyware software installed? I tend to use Windows Defender, install it, update it and then scan your PC with it.
Sometimes it's better to do the scan whilst your computer is in 'Safe Mode'

As for your automatic update problems, try using this it's helped me out a few times before now :)

Virus removal

Two quick suggestions:

1. More than one virus protection or spyware program running at the same time is Not A Good Idea. Each can potentially see the other as a threat.
2. For a proper solution go to geekstogo.com. They got me out of a very deep hole which i spent days trying to extricate myself from (and I'm in the software business.)

I had a similar problem

In the end I dumped AVG, dicked around with Norton and then and bought Internet Security Suite from Mcafee. It is on offer at £24.99 for three licences for a year. It has a maintenance option which does a 'tidy up' of the PC.

My PC runs a lot faster now and Mcafee is not as invasive as Norton.
