I've just bought a second hand Zumo 660 and can't understand the situation with maps.

According to the Zumo 660 (spanner, settings, map, map info), I currently have installed
CN Europe NT 2012.10 3D, plus
CN Europe NT 2010.10

When I go into myGarmin.com it reckons the unit has installed maps of
CN Europe NT 2012.10 Map+2D+P+3DB (unlocked 26 Apr 2013)
CN Europe NT 2013.41 Map+P+3D (unlocked 27 June 2013)
CN Europe NT 2014.10 Map+P+3D (unlocked 6 July 2013)

When I connect the Zumo so it can be interrogated by myGarmin it reckons I have installed
CN Europe NT 2014.10

But as mentioned at the top, the Zumo states it only has 2012.10. Am I confused? You bet.

MyGarmin lists codes and unlock codes for the 2012, 2013 and 2014 releases which leads me to think I might be able to install them. Are there any issues with doing this (I had heard of problems of running out of map space in the Zumo)?

The other issue is that I only have a CD for 2012, so if I plan routes in Mapsource I might have problems when they are transferred over to the Zumo if it has different maps.

you need to get maps on your pc the same as your unit ie most up to date maps, loads of threads on here on how to do this.
good luck:D

A call to Garmin should resolve your issues with your maps.

Buy a micro sd card if one is not all ready fitted so you dont run out of map space.

I am aware of the problem of not having the same versions of maps on the PC and the GPS which is why, after all, I mentioned it.

I've waited in a queue for Garmin telephone support and given up. Emailed them, no response yet. So thought I would ask here.

I think you will find that the 2012 3D is just the 3D overlay for the maps not maps themselves. So the device only see the 2010 maps. If you can download the 2014 ( to both your PC and the device) than you will of course have them both updated to the same version. There are no real problems in downloading routes and waypoints to a device with a different version. I do it all the time here, often several downloading to several devices in any one day. There is a lot of nonsense talked about this. When I download routes for our guests they almost without exception have different versions of the maps to mine. It works, the device recognises that the difference and calculates the route on it's own maps. Just takes a few minutes that's all.

I will give Garmin chance to respond on Monday and then try updating the GPS.

What I really can't understand is why the Garmin Communicator Plugin that is interrogating the GPS thinks the maps are 2014.10 when the unit reckons they are 2012.10.

Its a real shambles just now. I dunno about a PC experience but on a Mac the Garmin Express setup used to work - now it doesnt.
Tim mentioned 2014.10 loaded on 6th July - I was on holiday then, but having come back the Zumo has been attached to the Mac plenty times but Garmin Express only suggested that update last week.
Did it work? No. Flatly refused to update. Wouldn't recognise the card in the unit, only offering to load a different map region or buy a new card.
No change whether card was in or not. Garmin suggested Map updater to load latest maps to Mac and then load to the Zumo.
Yes, that works but of course when you plug the 660 in Garmin Express leaps into life offering to do stuff...

So - then plug in the Nuvi 765T for the car - a voice update and the 2014.10 maps to go in. Garmin Express apparently had it all sorted in 10 minutes. That was too good to be true, wasn't it!
Of course! But turning on said it could not unlock the Maps. Reconnect and Garmin Express says there's a map update. Yes! 2014.10 which it previously said was good to go.
Ok - update then... Away for 3 hours and I return to find it saying we're all good to go.
Turn on? Loading Maps...then says cannot unlock maps. Check the map Info and it says I'm using 2014.10 map. Tried re-starting - the same.

It really is a crock of shit now. Does no one at Garmin UK ever actually plug in a customer's unit and try updating it before releasing the latest marvellous update?

If TomTom could produce a better alternative - would they not sell in the millions?

Garmin Express is pretty good to look for quick updates to device only (if using a Mac) it will also check to see if there is "redundant data and files that can be dumped" ie old maps etc. Have a dig about on garmin express and you will see.

To match Device and Mac Map versions best to use MapUpdater - Garmin wont admit it yet but it is the only way to update your Mac and device to the same level of mapping if you currently have anything less than 2014.1

Easiest way to do this and cheapest in long run is to buy a lifetime maps deal (cheaper from someone like pentagon GPS....)

Choose UK and Ireland maps and update both device and Mac - then add tiles of different Countries later on - this also synchronises the unlock codes etc. Choosing larger areas takes most of the night to update and the slightest interruption in your Broadband ends up missing files and the whole thing just stalls.

Remember when they used to send you updates on a DVD with Mapsource, 30 mins all done. Don't think going forward has worked.

I do wonder if some of the problems with downloading maps is due to the fact that the UK has fallen behind with connection speeds. The last time I downloaded maps (all of Europe to PC and device) the whole process took under one and a half hours. Our connection is way faster than most in the UK but being in a rural backwater it is slow by Austrian standards. We know people here who download full length films in less time than it takes them to boil a kettle.

I wonder why Garmin choose to download & install all new maps and not just the bits that have changed. An update rather than a full install. Don't seem to have that with other program's. A new operating system on my Mac was downloaded quicker.

Rik - I only wish I could say "Yes, you're right..."

Yes, I was an early adopter of Garmin Express

Since it doesn't - they should stop it being a download that's available if you use a Mac. if you currently have anything less than 2014.1 Eh? What? Of course I had an earlier map! That's why Garmin Express was being used to update to 2014.10!

Uh-huh. I bought the 660 from Pentagon and it's had a lifetime update from day one!:comfort

Well, the 660 now has the maps on it that I want. So, apparently...has the Nuvi765T but every time it goes on, it says the maps are unable to be unlocked. Click ok? You see the map. Oooh - which map am I seeing? Why, it appears to be 2014.10! :blast
Next weekend I may be throwing the two of them as far as I can down the road.

Er, hope your next update works Rik!

Not true (re not being able to use Garmin Express to update device and computer). From memory, when GE gets to the screen that tells you that you do not have enough memory on your device and recommends that you load to an SD, if you select the other option, and then navigate down to the bottom of the drop down menu that is offered, there is the option to load to device and computer.

That said, there was a recent posting from Cookie http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=346681
that gave us a tutorial from Garmin how best to load selected maps to the device, others to your SD card and "all of Europe" to your computer

Sorry Paul - certainly didnt get that option on my Mac and Basecamp version. The good news was that the Garmin Express did allow me to download 2014.1 all of Europe to my device without using SD Card (I did allow the system to "fix unrecognised data" which I took as deleting old versions of City Nav....). That was the first update that fitted on my device without an SD extension in the last few years.

Only downside is I had the same issues about the device showing a warning that "the Maps could not be authorised or unlocked" (cant remember the warning exactly) but when I rang Garmin they said they knew about it and to reload everything via MapUpdater and this would cure the message and also allow me to update Basecamp as well as device to sync everything.

They were right....

Others may be different but I have to be honest I have not gone back and fiddled with it anymore cos I have a Mac with Basecamp showing City Nav 2014.1 and a Device showing City Nav 2014.1 and no error messages on the device after importing maps and for the first time in a long while no confusion on the device (no straight lines between waypoints - the magenta route actually follow the roads and does what it should do).

I have no complaints except that it took me a long while to get it right and that Garmin would have saved me a lot of time if they hadnt pushed me down the Garmin Express route first.

I agree with your viewpoint wholeheartedly. Garmin still have some work to do on "userbility" and "seamless software"

I wonder why Garmin choose to download & install all new maps and not just the bits that have changed.

I have often wondered the same thing.

I am lucky enough to have a reasonably fast broadband connection in London. Even so I have given up the quartely updates, simply updating once a year.... Which is much more often than I update my paper maps.

I too have binned Garmin Express.

not often I have been called a liar while trying to offer help but each to their own.....

Dont want to state the obvious but when I bought my Garmin 660 it had no SD card in it - guess what it had Western Europe on it then!!

Ah dear... I'm not calling you liar but I'd love to know how you manage to have the whole of 2014.10 Western Europe maps onboard your 660 without an SD card.
Oddly enough - when I got mine in March 2010, it had no SD card in it and it had...wait for it...all of Western Europe maps on it. But since 18months ago or thereabouts the whole of the new mapping wouldn't fit so an SD card was fitted for greater capacity.
Now, it's updated via Mapupdater - I don't have copies of other maps like 2011 or whatever on it.

But hey - if you really do have all of Western Europe on that 660 without an SD card - why the f... can't I?
