Let's start with no off road mapping on an off road bike, send it an off road gpx file and it reroutes you on the road, can't change the routing profile on the move, there is a lot of things for me personally but for road riders it's pretty good.

I use an XT (Navs before that) my personal view is that you'll not beat a stand alone GPS. I certainly wouldn't want to use my £1400 phone in the cradle. And have to take it out for photos etc. The vast majority of users in my group love it. But like you've said, It can be improved, which I'm sure will happen in time.

As was said the cradle does not contain any mapping.
You also have to realise that the cradle is for TFT BMWs and not just for the GS, not that many GS's go off road anyway.

The cradle goes hand in hand with the app, no tft on my bike. I like the wireless charging and I used it on a rally in Hertfordshire the weekend and it charged my phone perfectly while using my rally app. On road it's a great app but as much as you say most GS don't go off road it's still sold as an all Terrain bike.

I also said that the app and the cradle are not only designed for the GS. They were also designed for the 400cc scooter, my girlfriends S1000XR, my R1250RS, and every other BMW that is a road machine.

It's not an issue for me as I can use OsmAnd for off road routing, but I was asked why I thought i thought the app wasn't perfect, it's not just that it doesn't route off road, no system really routes off road, it's just that it changes an imported gpx file to what it thinks you should do and not the route you have plotted. No speed camera warnings either on the app, limited to the info given on the bike screen which can't be edited. I really like the nav 6, but for me the unreliability was to much to bear, but I really like the wheel control so my options were either a nav 5 or the cradle. The 5 has a dull screen but It was a tough call but I don't like clutter and the cradle could be used to power my phone when using it with my ICO app with no need for a power cable or another mount. Maybe I should have went for the wunderlinq but that looks poorly made compared to the connect app. For road use the bmw app is really fast and works well and I like the interface I just think it could have been better.

I had a WunderLINQ and didn’t get on with it. The app is pretty poor and beyond that it had limited utility. I sold it on here last year, so perhaps the new owner has got more from it.

The BMW cradle (which is not bike model specific) is OK, subject to the limitations (or advantages) of using a phone - and the phone’s associated app’s - on a motorcycle. The cheaper cradles, whether made in China, Italy or wherever, are (by and large) OK, too. Buy and use whatever suits you best or don’t buy the things at all. It really is that simple. Or is that too hard for some in the 21st century?

There is an entire section and additional sub-sections of UKGSer devoted all but exclusively to the subject, which has about as much to do with a water cooled GS (awesome as it might be) as I have with open work basket weaving or Morris Dancing.

I picked up some bananas today… oh and a new connected cradle as well.

Really pleased with the way it is fully integrated with the bike.

Via the connected app you can download any world maps you want but at present I prefer using my phones google maps.

My Nav 6 is 5 years old now and has started to occasionally do that ghosting thing so the connected cradle with my phone and the connected app is probably the best way going forward for me.
