Connecting Laptop to Wireless network???

I've got my two desktops connected to the same broadband connection via a Belkin router/wireless network. Connected them no problems.

I now want to connect my Advent Lap top........ but just can't do it. It has wireless built in, but when it searches for local w'less networks it never finds one, even when 2 feet away.

All components are 802.11g (whatever that is?)

But I'm at loss... any clues?

Help much appreciated.

check to make sure you have the wireless activated on your laptop.
if there is a wireless icon, check that it is active when searching for signal.

Well it did say "check that wireless turned on" but was not sure how to turn it on? Assumed that because it was searching, that it must be turned on?

How do I know if it's on?

Will, I had loads of trouble with my laptop, and even resorted to exchanging the wireless card, with no luck. So, I contacted the manufacturer and within minutes they came back and suggested basic stuff to try. The first suggestion was "keep the router away from loudspeakers", and as mine was virtually sat above a small bookshelf speaker, I gave it a whirl....and the connection was instant. Just a thought.

Properties of network connections will show your wireless connection - check to see if it is enabled and set to automatically obtain an IP address. If the connection is disabled there is probably a switch on your laptop to turn it on. Also log onto your router via the web interface on one of your PC’s and check that wifi is enabled on the router.

Still got problems

Still no go!

Found the little icon and wireless wasn't turned on... but now it is. That then produced a message saying the that wireless was still 'disabled' and that I should turn on the 'hardware switch' but there is no hardware switch. No physical switch (for any wifi) anywhere on the machine, so what does that mean.

Wifi is enabled on the router, because it is already connecting to my other PC via a wireless USB connector.

Router is not close to any speakers, but thanks for the suggestion, and as above it is already working with the other PC.

It seems definately to be something within the laptop, and I think it's the wifi card that isn't talking? The suggestion is that it needs turning on, but how?

Any more ideas?

To enable the wifi on an advent you press alt and F1.

Alt and F1 appears to absolutely nothing on this Advent.

Also, whereas last night I had two wifi related icons in the bottom rt corner of my screen. I now only have one. The one remaining is the one that brings up the 'wireless network connection' window. I had one last night that when clicked, gave the options disbable/enable wifi. The latter has now gone?

This is driving me mad.

Any more clues?

Looks like its the FN key + F1 to enable wifi on your laptop. Give it a shot

Hibernating

FN and F1.....

Was that a wind up?

All Fn and F1 does on this Advent is turn it off! (put it in 'hibernating' mode)

I think the machine must be faulty...... Can't think what else to try.

Wireless problems

Just a few tips

There are various speeds of wireless networks, dont want to send you to sleep but the most likely ones are 802.11b and 802.11g these are up to 10mbps (b) and up to 54mbps (g) if your router is only enabled for one speed then the other may not connect, you should be able to check the router to enable 'mixed' mode
