Hi Alec,

I shall leave it to others to explain signal hysteresis loops and stuff...

Options.. shown below and available at GPS Warehouse for £19.99 inc VAT, the ANT-76 version has higher signal gain. Used same with SilentG on his 1100S and hook it under rear seat cover - it locked on and improved signal/sat reception - though it was not in line of sight

ANT-19-MCX
Current: 4.5mA
Gain: 19.5dB(typ)
Cable: 5m

ANT-76-MCX
Current: 7mA
Gain: 28dB(typ)
Cable: 5m

I got mine from a guy on Ebay for a bit less. He does different length cables if you ash him nicely too.

Sounds good!

Has anyone got feedback on their experiences with external antennae?

As in whether they are worth the trouble?

seach for recent thread in GPS forum.

Yes. For the price well worth having. Mine has almost eliminated the lost signal problem. Mounted it on top of the headlamp cowl behind the windscreen using a piece of double sided velcro.

What ram-man said. I wouldn't be without the external antenna now, since it's a huge improvement on the flimsy built in antenna of my Quest. The unit very rarely lose the signal now. £20 well spent.

Is the issue of signal loss more a problem with the TT mount as it covers the top of internal aerial (I have the RAM mount on top on the clocks and don't have a regular problem). Just curious as to whether it would be an improvement in signal strength regardless of the mount used.

I've got one with a big plug for my old SPIII. Where can I get a small plug to connect it to the Quest or an adaptor, that would be even better? :)

if it's the same plug on the quest as on a 2610, RS sell them, but you need the crimper too at about £150

The Quest manual says it's a MCX-type connector. I don't know what the big one was called on the SPIII though.
