Conti Road Attack 4

I am having a set of Road Attack 4, Hyper Touring tyres fitted as we speak - along with the firmware update to reduce the chances of a gearbox shaft fail.

I've had them on a 1250GSA for 2300 miles.

As we know, they are a personal thing so here are my findings. I had them on an R1250GS briefly before having the tyres swapped over to the GSA

Not sure they are the best for the GSA as they have started to square off which I've never had before with other tyres at such a point (photo below). In saying that, I've not had a GSA for a few years.
Yes, I do dual carriageway work but only as part of my commute so it probably equates to less than 30% of my total riding which is a lot on B Roads commuting, and pleasure rides. I've also just done 1300 miles with panniers on for a few days away in the Borders.

They have slipped in the wet about four times in 'Road' mode. I can't comment whether that was shiny tarmac/gravel etc but the electronics didn't kick in so maybe not needed to so they weren't massive. I'll perhaps switch to 'Rain' mode next time in the wet just to help a situation, in case!

I was going for the Trail Attack 3's but thought I would try the latest 'road' versions. There wasn't many reviews when I ordered them but those that were around at the time were positive. I also considered the Roadsmart 4's as they seem to have more reviews.

Anyway, for me, I don't think I will have them again, I can't see me getting the tread pattern life out of the tyre before they've squared off too much, but time will tell if the tyre characteristics change and it doesn't get much worse.

Hope this helps in some way.

Dizzy

Well I had them fitted and after a couple of days, wet and dry - I like them. The 4's are supposed to be a dual compound 'hyper touring' tyre more resistant t squaring off and better wet weather grip than the 3's - lots of marketing hype, but we shall see after my June trip to Troyes.

No, they are not dual compound in the traditional sense. Unlike some (real dual compound) tyres you will not find a step in grip OR a line developing in the compound joint after some use. I have seen this with other makes but not these.
They are single compound tyres with a different curing process to arrive at a softer tread on the edges and more hard wearing centre.

Thanks for that - they were described on a Germán video as dual compound with them being tested on a R1250GS. Multi-grip is a better description.

I have been a big fan of the 3s. Used them on 1290gt, r1200gs and on to my second pair on the 1250gs.
I could not find 4s here at the back end of last year, so had to ‘make do’ with the rather good ‘old tech’! The sipes not running to the edge on the back tyre should be an improvement though on the new ones, as the 3s have a tendency to lift a little bit on the edge of the tyre with hard use.

I think the 4's have only recently become available - not done many miles on them yet but so far I am very happy with them.

Got them on my RT1250.Not the GT as they were'nt available.Excellent tyres and wearing well.Done 3k so far and confident in their wear rate to complete a 4k tour of Balkans and Greece next month.

Any more feedback on Conti Road 4's please?

I've been a huge fan of CTA3 for a few years now, had 4 rears and 3 fronts. Awesome tyres, I can't fault the CTA3 (V Rated on GS). Great grip, great longevity...

Needing new tyres for the next Euro trip, and see that Conti suggests the Road 4 on their own website, I'm also wondering if there's a CTA4 on the horizon?

No planned off road work on the horizon ;)

After many years on Michelin Anakees, PR3, PR4 and PR5s, I went to CTA3s and I have been very impressed indeed in all conditions and I have just done a 2000+ trip around the French Alps and I cant fault them, excellent tyres!

For me the RA4 were not the best , I was hoping for a more road version of the TA3 but found they were vague , and moved around too much and skipped. Now I don’t mind a set moving around but these seemed to move in unexpected places so took them off as I l lost confidence in them , went back to the TA3 which is the best out there .

i had ra 3s on my vstrom 650. they felt squared off after 1500mls. very little straight line roads.now on michelin 6s, far better.

Thanks guys, I'll stick (no pun intended) with CTA3. I'm getting about 10k miles from a front, and 7-8k from rear (always V rated for the extra tread depth), and find them really confident in all conditions. Can't fault them really!

What about an up date after your trip. Thanks

No issues with them, felt fab to start with but they are squaring off just as fast as any other tyre I have had, in spite of the so called softer edges, harder middle claim.
