conti road attacks..

Just got back from 3000 mile trip on new Conti Road attacks. Trip round alps, dolomites etc.. Nice feel to the tyre, they roll smoother than the BWs and drive out of corners well but don't seem quite so good when it is damp and greasy. At max or close to max lean angle, I don't think they feel as secure as the BWs. I notice the front has also worn close to the edge, something that never happened on the BWs so either the tyre has a different shape or I'm taking more liberties braking into corners. to summarise, I thnk they are good but not substantially better in the wet than BWs, Road Pilots or D607s. With any of these i can scrapethe pegs (or the brake pedal) when it's dry so what I want is max wet grip as I like to speed up in the wet to get home and dry;)

been on a small track with my bike
so much grip that on full lean i scrach the crash bar

Used new Road Attacks for a 2,700 mile trip to the Alps. In contrast to posts above, I found them excellent. Superb dry grip, nothing even like a twitch or wobble during high- or low-speed cornering. We did lots of miles in the wet, sadly, and they were fine, as well as on slightly wet roads.

They're just beginning to feel a little bit squared off if you rub your hand round the profile of the tread, perhaps slightly quicker than Battlewings, but I really liked the feel of them. Definitely inspired more confidence than other tryes I've used on the 1200.

One man's meat etc...

Hmmm, I seem to be thinking about tyres a lot tonight :D

I had conti road attacks, and conti sport attacks on my old CBR. Now I know it's far from a GS but my god did I love those tyres. Oodles of grip, never felt them give at all, and believe me I tried at times! They were good in the wet too. I'd get some on the GS, but I keep telling myself I'll be going offroad sooner or later :D

Tyre Pressures

OK guys - lots of talk about how good everyones' tyres are, but surely the pressure that they are run at must have a big influence on how they feel and perform.
I have been running my Azzaro/Storm combo at 36/42 which is the pressure Avon say for the Distanzas - plenty confidence, and firm ride - but this is a much higher pressure than suggested for any other tyres for the 1200GS.
Anyone else running this combo? Any other suggestions for pressures? :bounce1

Tourances are recommended at 36/42 or if you have an ADV then they are 42/42:confused: (I contacted metzeler to confirm this).

Most manufacturers recommend 36/42 now

Tyre comparisons

"New version Tourance and Conti Trail attack also due out soon," ... yes, I think that the new Tourace is available here & that will be MY choice; However tyre choice seems to be a very personal thing & depends a great deal on your style of riding, the roads you use, their surface and the traffic situations.

after 6000 miles my rear conty road attack is almost finished....
i have search and found that metzler has the roadtec Z6 in gs size....
does anyone have an ideea about them?

Fact

What sort of mileage do you guess you'll get from the Battle Wings. I'm guessing at 4500 before they're illegal at the wear rate up to 3000 miles :(

100% truth
ive done just under 10k miles now (in last 18 weeks)
two up touring and just being a tosser everywhere
still got plenty of tread left
but
cos of the touring got a bit of a flat in middle of rear tyre
i am now looking for new tyres for our next trip
and am at a complete loss as to why i should buy another make
these Battle Wings have been great :clap :clap :clap

Battlewings and Trail Attacks

My 1200 GS was shod with Battlewings from new and at the 6k service still had at least 2k miles left.

Changed them at service for Conti Trail Attacks and have just done 2860 miles round France on them. Initially they took a bit of getting used to and also I had not ridden the bike fully laden before but once used to them really enjoyed them round the thousands of corners they've done. They felt very sure footed in the wet and are not squared off at all (but then I did no Autoroutes and only really to and from Dover on dual carrigeways)

When new they had 4.5mm on the front and 9mm on the back, they now have 3.5mm on the front and 7mm on the back!

I really enjoyed the Massif Centrale and the Tarn and Ardeche gorges, I've never seen so many corners of all shapes and sizes - as Shenzi says 'A real playground'

I hope this sheds a little constructive light on the subject.

I've got myself some contiroads on the GS now. I'm chuffed with them as I knew I would be from my previous experience.

Yeah they might not last as long as a proper touring tyre, but I personally like to mess about a bit in the bends, and for that they're great. I don't mind getting new tyres every once in a while anyway, I like to try out different ones every now and then as tyres make such a massive difference. That said, I've never had a tyre last long enough to wear out, bloody punctures every time  Oh well.

Conti Road Attacks in the wet

I am half way through the life of my second pair of Conti Road Attacks on my GS 1100 and took the first pair from new through France, Spain and Belgium on a five week and 5,000 mile tour last September/early October. In the dry they are superb, inspiring confidence on corners that match the excellent GS performance on mountain roads. In the wet, though, I find them a little skittish through tight corners at reasonably fast but legal speeds. This may say more about my personal riding ability in UK winter wet weather but it's enough of a bother that I'll be trying Metzler Tourance tyres next time.

Sounds about right, shit to a blanket in the dry, not so good when cold & wet & 5K miles life. Cheap though

I have been running Continetal trail attacks for about 3 weeks with one week at the TT. Very please so far, definately an improvement on the michelin anakee. They are much smoother on the road.

me too ace tyres:thumb

I've just had 2 new tyres fitted to my 1200adv.

Avon Distanzia's,2 valves,balanced,and fitted for £151.12:beerjug:

Top service from Micheldever Tyres, only took 25 minutes:clap Just about had time to drink my coffee:thumb2

Responding to previous enquiries, recommended tyre pressures are 36/42 for front & rear.

I've always had Avons, they grip well, wear well, and I like 'em:thumb2
