Converting a R1200RT 2009 police bike - advice needed

I'm sure this has been answered before but what are the pit falls of buying a ex police bike. They come up with mileage around 35k with history but I guess a hard ish life. I'm not wanting a show stopper but a bike to use in the winter and rainy days as my other bike is spring-autumn use only. Not worried about passenger seat but was thinking of converting it back. Also do these have affect on insurance against a standard bike? I know motorworks do a kit but anybody used it and what's it come with?

Some will have been treated well, by a rider who loves his bike; most will not have. When going for sale I know that parts get swapped over - slightly warped discs, tyres, wheels, panniers etc, to leave the better bits "in-Force". Having ridden 'em for 38 years in my "former life", I'd say you're likely to do better elsewhere.
 
Lots of wires you don't know what they are for. my mate bought one, nothing but trouble, mostly electrics but alternator went too.
 
I wouldn't buy any ex police vehicle and having been one for 39 years (retired this month) I speak with a little knowledge of how they are generally treated (a work tool) ;)
 
If you do decide to convert, I would suggest you keep the original police panniers.
With a top opening, they are grossly superior (if a little smaller) to the original side opening ones.
Until you travel with someone who has top opening panniers, you do not realise how much more practical top opening ones are.

I bought a late 2007 one about 3 weeks ago, have done about 800 miles on it so far, it's got 70,000 + miles on it, runs as sweet as a nut, rear suspension feels as though it may be on the way out, but very happy with it. Main downside is that they don't have the on board computer and some don't have ESA, but for the price you can't knock them! Motoworks sell a seat conversion kit for about £440, I never take a pillion so no problem:thumb

Budget new brakes, clutch, and shocks. Also check all suspension bushes & bearings. Many are special sizes & priced to suit.
