Converting standard rear/tail & indicator lights to LEDs....advice required please

Dear forum

Currently have an 07 GSA 12 with standard rear/tail lights & indicators; a mate has suggested converting to LED's as part of my bike refurb project.....so, has anyone successfully achieved this conversion, and if so, can you tell me what parts are needed & where to buy?

Thx in advance.....:thumby:

You can buy a plug n play rear light conversion, not sure about indi's though someone else should know I'll follow this as I'd like to go the route too ;)

I spoke to Mikey & he seems to think everything can be bought & fitted en masse; just need to know what items & where to get them :D

Hi Keith

i got Bahnstormer to fit my rear LED and i did all the indicators

its a good retro fit far better than the originals

It didn't cost very much at all to get the rear one fitted

good luck

oh yea - like a prick i fitted the rear indicators on the front :D make sure they are fitted the right way round

Gaz

Mine was same colour as yours Keith

ive chopped and changed loads - like you the indicators

its a 2006 with 55k on it

That looks good.:thumb

I did it, not that difficult just time consuming, you need the conversion kit from BMW and everything plugs into it. It felt like you have to take most of the back end apart but it was worth it. Full workshop instructions came with the conversion lead.

Go for a proper OEM light cheapos on fleabay not worth it and could cause problems. You may need GS 911 to get the canbus to see the conversion I didn but best for warned

Keith, I did mine as well. I spoke to Motorworks and they sent all the bits, the indicators need small adapter looms but are basically plug and play. The rear light was slightly more complex, it needs an adapter loom and if I recall correctly I had to break into the wiring under the rear seat area and splice in the new wires. It's not entirely clear which wire does what but you soon work it out, I initially muddled the rear light and brake light wires but it was obvious as soon as I tested the system.

Also I think I might have a brand new spare rear LED light that I was keeping as a back-up, bought on here. I'll check my bits drawer if it's of any interest?

Stu.

Worth doing as the rear light cluster on earlier bikes usually goes rotten with over time with water and dirt ingress.

Did mine 2008 GSA recently, got the extra loom plugs and didn't need them. LED indicators plugged straight in and worked 😊

Just time consuming getting access to the rear looms as you have to remove the top cover under the seats.

The back end of my bike is fully stripped @ the moment anyway, so no worries on that front.

Mine is OK, but could do with a clean; or an LED conversion, hurrah!!!!!

If a standard lamp fails you buy another, pull the lens off and fit new unit. The OEM LED units can fail and did for one guy on an Alaska trip a couple of years back so he had the back of his bike stripped at the hotel to replace the complete unit which was, very fortunately, in stock at a local BMW dealer.

If you can get good accessory items which simply plug into the standard light unit that may be a good idea if you use the bike in remote places.

Keith I'd advice to check the connections first before ordering the wiring kit, if you find you need it I have a complete kit I'm sure I could supply at a reduced price :-)

I've managed to source a set of indicators that are compatible for le bike......just need a rear tail unit now; 2 options:-

> LED insert from motorworks, which seems to be the easiest solution, usinf the existing housing & red lens
> Found a new rear tail unit with clear lens from Hornig in Germany which requires wiring in (not really my strong point....

Decisions, decisions...then you pop up with a complete kit....:blast:D
