Having been on a brief weekend jolly to Wales and back, I thought i'd road test a Sat Nav app I was recommended called CoPilot. Just throwing in my two cents to say if you're looking for a low cost (free for the first 2 weeks) solution, give it a bash. Downloads to your phone (Apple and Android covered) and instantly I was thoroughly impressed with the amount of features it had. You can plot your route, point by point, or just tell it to go between two places, and then drag the route over routes you'd prefer. It'll save routes, show you POIs, cafes, petrol stations, the lot. You even get messages through if it hears of a traffic incident ahead on your route. I'm aware this is all fairly bog standard stuff on most satnavs, but at £17, its a bloomin' bargain if you ask me.

Interested to see what you chaps think.

Can it import routes created on the PC? Say a GPX file from ITN Converter or TYRE?

Edit: Just had a look, ITN Converter can convert to and export files in the *.TRP (CoPilot 8 format), might that work?

Thanks, that's great. Might buy CoPilot later this week then and give it a whirl*. Sounds like it'll be so much easier than that on Android. Added to which why didn't he just use ITN Converter to plot the routes in the first place, it's very good at that. He'd then be able to choose exactly where his routing nodes are rather than having a randomly filtered set from the KML file :nenau

* I already have both Garmin and TomTom sat navs but I have something in development that needs to cater for the common formats and if it's that easy to get routes onto CoPilot (esp. for Android users) then I see it as being a contender and worthy of investigation.

Converting GPX

I can't get that link to work for me.

Just spent an hour fiddling with CoPilot and it seems fairly straightforward to convert and upload a .gpx file to the android app.

First you need to work out where CoPilot saves it's .trp files. On my Galaxy S3 it was

\GT-I9300\Phone\com.alk.copilot.mapviewer\EU\save

ITN converter doesn't seem to support .trp version 9, and I couldn't get CoPilot to open a version 8 file, but there is an online converter at
http://www.routeconverter.de/home/en

Open the .gpx file in converter. By default an alphabetical list of waypoints is shown, there's a dropdown at Position List to show route. Once route is displayed SaveAs give it a name and choose type CoPilot 9 (*.trp)

Connect Android phone to PC, copy the .trp file(s) into the directory.

Start CoPilot, Click on the Route icon (second from left), Plan or Edit Trip, Options, Load then select the route you've just copied over.

Can't say I'll be getting rid of my Zumo, but it might come in handy.

It's a good app if you're visiting the USA as it's cheaper than buying Garmin or Tomtom maps at £12 :thumb2
