Evening all,

I have an ageing Acer laptop on which I have Mapsource installed. My problem is that the screen is starting to play up and I know that its' days are probably numbered.

I have a Lenovo machine as backup but I no longer have all the Mapsource discs to install it on that machine and as I absolutely detest Basecamp I'm not sure what to do now. Ideally I'd like to transfer the installed program to the "new" machine but do any of you know if that is possible, or can you suggest an alternative?

I was looking at software called "Transferring Installed Programs from One Computer to Another Windows 11/10" from easeus.com but am not sure if this would be the answer. Both machines are running Windows 10.

What do you think?

i just did this .

FIRST ...BACK-UP BOTH COMPUTERS .

i copied Mapsource from documents or downloads , to a separate portable hard drive .

move hard drive to alt computer , then copied from hard drive to new computer .

now I'm not that clever ....but you might be able to go computer to computer missing out hard drive bit , going via usb ports ?

I'm sure someone who is smarter , will be along shortly.

HTH.

you fancy git ....I'm still on W7 .

The Bear beat me to it!

I struggled with basecamp for a while but once you get used to it (there are plentThe y of Youtube tutorials the motoez tim site deals with it from the basics) it does way more stuff than mapsource and obvs works with newer GPS units which mapsource does not. Cheers M.

For some reason I can't remember I have MapSource on one of my computers. It's the same version as the link I posted and claims there are no updates to it. You may need to have a map installed before firing up MapSource so I'd suggest using this https://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html to copy your maps to the Lenovo before trying to install MapSource.

Hi Aidan, just loaded Mapsource from the garmin link on a Windows 11 machine and it works grand and found my NT maps

Lots of helpful suggestions so far thank you very much chaps.

I followed the link from Bear but could only get a "global map" with virtually no detail. I think I'll have to use JaVaWa as suggested in the hope that I can get the same result as Mzokk.

Thanks again. :thumb2

I got my mapping transferred across but Mapsouce is now looking for the unlock code.

Hi Aidan, I can't remember how the old unlock codes work. I still have the CN Europ 2008 DVD but I'm not sure it would help much. I have downloaded open streetmaps from here.

http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

When garmin moved to city navigator NT which my old 2610 can't use I used these maps which have the advantage of being bang up to date.

MapSource will only detect mass storage devices, whereas your device is by default in mtp mode. That's why your card is seen but not your device.

Set your device to mass storage mode and it'll then work with MapSource.

Out of curiosity I did some experimenting. I uninstalled everything Garmin from my Win11 test rig then downloaded MapSource which refused to install as it's an upgrade and found nothing from Garmin to validate against. I then downloaded and installed Garmin Express: MapSource still won't install. I then ran Express with a Nuvi with lifetime maps connected and told it to install the maps to the computer. Express did install to computer then brought up an error rather than installing BaseCamp. Mapsource would then install and found CN NTU 2022.2 without any fooling with unlock codes. I then downloaded and installed BaseCamp which also found the map without problem. Whether or not the Nuvi having lifetime maps made a difference is something I don't know but my instinct is that it shouldn't matter.
Hope this helps.
