Bikes that get used through the winter may have a problem developing with the lubrication system, specifically where the oil leaves the engine to go to the oil cooler and returns to the engine. Any leak at the return to the sump is easy to see at the lower left of the engine but the feed is under the tank on top of the block at the right front, here:-

Mine looked like this:-

The alloy crush washer was almost completely corroded away in several places. It may not result in total oil loss and a ruined engine but it could leave you stranded and covered in oil.

A Dowty seal is a washer with a bonded-in rubber insert. The metal part is sometimes silver in colour, sometimes yellow, depending on the type of plating used.

Oil Cooler Pipes

Its not just the washers that get worn out, although mine did need replacing.

When I got the 2002 bike this year, it had been used all year round.

Good mileage at around the 93000 mark. :beerjug:

One of the first thing I did was replace the oil cooler pipes as they were rusted almost though from the outside.

New second hand ones got a good coat of Smoothrite, they should last a while now. :thumb2
