Hope this is correct page to post. I have a 1250gs bought new my 2019. It’s kept in a garage, rarely used in winter. I regularly use ACF 50 to protect it.
The cylinder cover has got a few bubbles of corrosion on it. BMW say this is due to stone chips. Any one else got or had the same problem.

I have a picture but cannot attach

Is the paint broken, can you actually feel stone damage, if the paint is only bubbled and not broken it can't be stone chip damage.

Yes it’s bubbled the stone chip is about a cm away from the bubbles. I cannot see how to add the picture using an an iPad.

Although a 1200, mine has had a few bubbles since I’ve owned the bike on the left cover. It’s on the top of the cover where no stone could realistically hit it. It has never got worse which if corrosion it normally would so just left it.

My bro had a little off and scraped his case et and for £10 he got flick can that had a perfect match. So I will do the same if it ever gets worse or I decide it bothers me.

I bought my R1200GS when it was roughly a year old, from a BMW dealer. A few months later, in similar circumstances, it had corrosion on the engine casing and drive casing which was bubbling up from underneath, and was not caused by anything breaking the paint. My dealer put in a warranty claim and BMW approved a new engine, gearbox and final drive because it was cheaper for them to do that than pay the dealer's labour charges to rebuild into new casings.

From what I understand it is quite common.

This happened to my friends 14 plate GS and is just starting on his 19 plate 1250 GS on the top of the left hand cylinder head... Dont know if it makes any differance but both his engines had grey paint.
My 1250 is the same age and 3 times the mileage but the black engine and not a spot of corrosion anywhere :nenau

When you say rarely used in the winter do you mean it has been used in winter or not ?

Yes been used occasionally in winter but during winter each wash I reapply acf 50m

Exactly the same as my 2014 and 2019 GS’s. The 2014 had a new engine and driveshaft fitted under warranty in 2016.

Neither bike used in winter and always garaged.

Their finish on the bikes now just isnt as good as say my old 1150...that seemed to be military grade.
But to me my 1250 is still the best bike in the world...rough with the smooth i suppose

My '03 1150GS needed major cosmetic refurbishment by 2011. Paint had fallen off the engine and gearbox, (the underside of which was an horrific mess) and the frame, racks etc were very tatty. A bit annoying after only being used and neglected all year round for 8 years.

I had an 08 / 15 and 18 GSA and the deterioration in the quality of finish was highly noticeable, even with acf50 and no winter riding, one of reasons I moved away from the GS.

Go back to BMW & insist they do something about it, personally I don't use my bike between Oct & April, not worth the hassle of everything corroding & rusting.

I'm not that desperate to ruin a good bike.

I had a 2003 R1150GS too and, much though I loved the bike, it started bubbling on both cylinder heads, front fork legs and rear hub by the time it was 5 years old. BMW didn’t want to know and made me a derogatory offer against a R1200GS. I bought a Buell Ulysses instead and the finish on that was perfect!

I can’t see me buying another GSA after this one finishes its pcp, having to travel 150 miles for a dealer that seems capable, and even then the bike is doing a good self destruct by slowly oxidising and rusting away. Mines due a right cylinder and final drive swap due to poor finish, and the dealer won’t give me a loaner as I live too far away and they don’t want me to put 300plus miles on their bike.

Great bikes, poor build quality and dealers can be shite or utter shite.

I’ve had a long line of BMWs and nothing seems to be changing, it’s as if they don't read the lessons learned log.

Flip side , my new 1250 was acfd once back in 19 , ridden in most conditions throught the years ( oct 18 reg) always washed , dried and silicon sprayed . not a bubble , loads of chips tho due to the back lane riding but still no degradation to the surface. I must be lucky . Only time not ridden is when i know its been gritted and wait for the rain to take away the salt on the roads then back out.
Had issues with my old 13 plate , but the dealer changed the bits.

I've got a 2018 GSA 1200 TB and at 4000 miles had to have a new rear sub frame and main stand replaced (at no cost) due to extensive corrosion issues :( The new sub frame is in grey so now matches up with the rest of the bike much better and I have now used 3M clear tape and a new 1250 main stand cover on my new stand. I've also thoroughly washed the bike and given it the full ACF50 treatment...... Let's see how things go?

Just recently purchased a 2017 1200 Rallye, the paint is bubbling on the engine casing just behind the front wheel and at the inlet manifold. Complained to dealer and BMW have approved warranty replacement.
I would got at them again for a second opinion.

Mine is in at the moment for swing arm, FD and cylinder head replacement due to corrosion. No argument at all, replaced under warranty (year 3)

Do you get a 50% discount as you’re only using it half the year?
