Its the time of year for holiday planning questions.

Corsican ferries. Nice to Calvi or Bastia. Late August.

Does anyone know if must be a 'book ahead' or can I turn up on the day.

Been on their website. No info re this.

Thanks :thumb2

Doesn't anyone know.
I thought someone knew everything about everything here.

I suppose I could phone them up.

I've never tried just turning up there but have used the Toulon-Bastia and Nice-Bastia routes in July. We'd pre booked and on both occasions the ferry was rammed solid with both bikes and cars. I'd imagine August to be even busier as most of France goes on their holidays then.

As an aside they (Corsica Sardinia Ferries) don't cater for bikes anywhere near as well as the cross channel ferry companies. Expect to have to lash your bike to a metal rail running the length of the deck using a grotty bit of cord. My GSA was resting against the rail with a car parked almost touching the other side of the bike. I had to pad it out with our jackets to stop it getting bashed. The Dutch bloke on a brand new (700km) K1200LT was distinctly p****d off at how his 20000 euro bike was treated. I wasn't best impressed myself.

Fabulous, beutiful island though. Well worth a visit.

having done the trip too i have to agree with high tower, on all points and i did the trip late may june 2007 it was busy and bikes tightly packed.

i'd book. and get a cabin unless you like camping out on a big boat

It's 10 years ago, but I just turned up at the dock booking office at Nice, don't recall conditions on the ferry as been bad at all, tho' it was crowded.

I DO recall the girl in the booking office as been breathtakingly good looking:drool

I confined my excursions to the West/Middle /South of the island as had been advised the East side was not so interesting. The middle, hill roads, are slow and scenic and I thought this was the best bit all told.

Worth remembering that Sardinia is only an hour ferry trip away, I went but they were'nt ready for me so I caught another(overnight) ferry to Napoli, did Pompei etc then ambled over the Alps home. Great trip.

Enjoy:thumb

Sailed Nice to Bastia in mid Sept 08 and had pre-booked the ferry some months previously to make sure our small group (5 bikes) all got aboard the same ferry. The car deck was pretty crowded even although the ship itself was not that busy. Bikes were 'parked' tight against the ship sides and cars then parked pretty close.

Corsica is a lovely island although the roads in the north Cap Corse are narrow, bumpy and slow. May be even worse in August.

Suggest you do also pre-book any accommodation as even in Sept it was pretty busy and many hotels full. Accomodation outside the towns also seemed thin on the ground. We found one of our hotels had double booked us and it took a lot of effort to find somewhere else to stay.

Drop me a pm if you want to pick my (limited) brain about the place. I should still have a decent Corsica road map kicking about if you want it.

If your thinking of going in August you deserve a medal. Everybody and there gradmother is there in August the island fills with tourists add to that all those who have moved to the mainland in search of gold, they all come home in there flash cars, wallets bursting, determined to show everybody how successful they have been. They visit grandmamar and taste her speacial garlic snail stew. Only when they taste it do they realise why they left. So they whip her of her boney bulging vained legs and charge up the mountain with her to some ancient eating house, where they drink and eat like they have not had a drop since they left home.
The ferry prices go up the funnel, it's at least 3 times what you would pay in the spring season. Everywhere that sells food decides to hike there prices so high that you go back outside to have a look how many Mitchelin stars are on the door.even if it is only a French greasy spoon.
Spring for my money is the most beautifull time the mountains are alive with flowers the scent is so strong you can taste it. It is relativly free of tourists you can walk round the small harbours soaking up the ambience of the people and the place. You are not stuck in a people jam, where all you can see is the arse in front of you. You can meander up through the mountains on the bike soaking up the sensational scenery. And you will not meet the pi$$ed up nutter and his grandmother on there way from the mammoth eating and drinking session just as Renaie is showing her what a smooth ride his car is even at 120klicks an hour down a goat track. He also it would appear seems to be hell bent on you finishing your holiday crushed 400 foot down in the bottom of the ravine. No mate if it's August or now't save your Euro's do go, but out of the peak holiday time, and you will love every minute of it it is truly a beautifull island.
Have a good un' where ever you go.

PS sorry about the spelling. Bloody state education.
