Is it 'cause I was wearing my LWD tee shirt?

Was bumbling along merrily having already done 40 miles so nice and warm. Approaching a roundabout, went into 3rd and the big bu@ger died on me.

Managed to paddle it out of the way and it reluctantly restarted. Run quite rough for a few slow miles but then seemed to be a bit better. I pulled into a layby because I wanted to see what might happen at the next roundabout and it didn't cut out.

Rode home (another 15 miles or so), beginning to think I had imagined all and it had another coughing fit a few hundred yards from home - sort of like a "stuttering" if that makes sense.

Also noticed a slight burning oil smell - been like that since I got it a month ago but don't know if that's significant / normal or what.

It's a 2000 1150.
And it even had petrol in it. Ran fine over the weekend - did about 100 miles.

Any gems of wisdom?
Cheers

sounds to me like it could possibly be a problem with the HT leads. Not unlikely on a 9yr old bike.

developments....

Just been out to ride it into the garage and won't start at all. The whirring noise that you hear when you first turn the ignition on (starter motor or fuel pump??) keeps sporadically whirring, joined by the noise of what I assume are relays clicking away quite randomly (i.e. not the rhythmic clicks of the abs).

make mental note.... must learn about motorcycle mechanics.....

could my tank be a swimming pool in disguise?

If the rev counter is flicking about then it may be the hall sensor. I had the opportunity to observe this twice whilst sitting at the side of the road. Do a search and you should get more info to confirm it prior to shelling out for a new sensor.

Yep, sounds like the culprit. Bloody loads playing up at the moment.

Makes you wonder if it's age related, a couple of years ago we generally only heard of Hall sensor problems on 1100s.

An update for those who might be interested.

The dealers (non bmw) have had the bike for around 3 weeks now. At first, it appeared that the tank was indeed full of water. That was drained and the breather unblocked. I was then told that the water had gone through the fuel system and the injectors etc had been stripped down and water removed.

There was still a major problem after all of this was done - relating to the firing. I mentioned to them what had been said to me about the hall sensor, and the said they would check that out.

The bike was has now been taken by them to a bmw dealership where a faulty ECU has been diagnosed. Being replaced under the dealers used bike warranty (thank goodness).

hopefully that then will be the end and I can ride somewhere...
