Coughing and stalling - why?

My 2010 GS has an intermittent problem: after waiting at a junction or traffic lights to pull away, about one time in 30 the engine will cough and sometimes stall when the throttle is opened from idle to pull away.

This evening, after waiting for a minute or two idling at traffic lights it just coughed and died when I went to pull away. It re-starts fine.

The dealer can find no stored fault - has balanced the TB's and checked valve clearances too, but to no avail.

So what next? Any thoughts on what to look for please?

I've had 2 bikes do this both 2010 , I believe fault is down to the engine mapping , although couple of things to check - air leaks around throttle bodies (don't use WD40) and again cleaning the engine around the O2 sensors again with WD40 , oxygen sensors easily damaged by silicon - you tend to know when it's going to happen as the engine runs very slightly rough, when this happens I bring up the revs slightly while waiting for lights to change, hope this helps :beerjug:

The 2010 (possibly later ones too?) model doesn't like then throttle being blipped too rapidly, especially when the engine is cold, if you do, then sometimes it will cough and cut out (starts again with no problem) - but if it stalls under normal use then get another BMW dealer to check it out.

Thanks - would you suggest removing the oxygen sensors and cleaning them? And if so, with what?

The bike's due a 9k mile service next month, so I'll see if the BMW dealer closer to me can make any sense of it.

Thanks for all the advice :thumb2

never clean oxygen sensors ,be it with carb cleaner/parts cleaner, they will probs never work again .
been there done that i had to buy new ones .
expensive lesson learned.:thumb

my 2010 does this too - always has - exactly the symptoms you describe.

never been a huge issue but i agree slightly annoying.

i wondered whether it was anything to do with the exhaust flap as that was the new addition in 2010 :nenau but I'm no mechanic

Might the super lean euro fuel maps they all have, Hilltop remap might fix it.

Loads of posts on ADVrider from people whos bikes stall when the throttle is blipped when waiting at junctions

I also think this may have somthin to do with it, because it effectibly smothers the engine thats why i removed mine, mine has only stalled once after blippin the throttle, but i strongly suspect the exhaust flap as opposed to other things

All very interesting - thank you.

I noticed that my partner's 2012 R1200R does it too, so there's obviously something amiss with these bikes.

I have AUB warranty until June 2013, and would be tempted by a Hilltop remap once the warranty runs out. In the meantime I'll strip down and lube the exhaust valve tomorrow, and see whether it makes any difference.

I'm having similar problems with a rough running 2006 GSA, fully serviced by an ex BMW mechanic, valve gaps checked, plugs changed, TB's set and balanced, have also changed both lambda sensors for New NGK versions, stalling/erratic running still persists, I'm lost for what to try next.
The NGK lambdas were cheaper than original BMW, but thought NGK have a good enough product name to go with as opposed to originals.
Could it be a coil or coils breaking down? Anyone had similar problems and how was it sorted, any body got any suggestions?:beerjug:

See also these posts of mine, this is a known problem, experienced by many but BMW will not admit there is any problem, I have tried everything t o get them to respond with an explanation. Most frustrating. I have owned 2 other R1200GS's a 2004 and a 2007 and they did not display this condition, I have riden a few other DOHC models (2010 and 2012) and they also did this :nenau
