Getting an mot at my mates shop today and he had these two old harleys he's restored.

Not overdone, nicely understated. Sorry, phone pics only.

Got to ask, whats with all the metal studs in the leather?
Always wondered, is it jsut for show (hope not) or is it a legacy from bygone years?

They are original / period panniers.

The studs may have some usefullness for reducing wear but my guess is they are a styling exercise. They major competitor in the states for HD was Indian and their bikes were completely

The 1950 bike is a police model. Just in front of the pannier is a siren, which is foot operated.
You can see the heel pedal and linkage which operates it to the rear of where a normal gear lever would be.

I wanted a 53 Pan for the same reason but settled for this 64 Duoglide which was set up to look similar to a 53 Hydraglide. Another bike I probably should have kept but it was a labour of love to keep it running well when I used it so infrequently. Also the brakes were crap and not really suited to today's riding conditions. Similarly, the tyres but I didn't really want to start 'modernising' it. I sold it for those reasons and because I always felt guilty not using it enough

Is that not a foot operated clutch? Gear lever is on the tank.

And are the dates not the wrong way round? The bike in the top photo has a side valve motor, which Harley stopped producing around in the early '50's

The foot clutch pedal is the main pedal in full view.
Folow the rod linkages back from the siren and it leads to the small heel operated pedal just below the round chromed section of the primary chaincase .

You could well be right on the dates of the bikes
