I bit the bullet.

Since I'm going to Spain in April, I got a Gold subscription to MRA planner and started using this, instead of Basecamp, to plan the trip - so I can see if I can "make friends" with it.
To be fair, the Michelin Maps layer was the only thing the I needed to be convinced, since I routinely plan in Basecamp keeping Michelin Maps open in a browser window and try to match the green-marked roads :D
On MRA it's simpler.

Anyway, couple of questions:

1. is there any way (or any plan in the roadmap) to be able to download the maps, or a portion of it? I'm looking at the scenario of having to edit local routes while traveling and having poor/no connection on location. I still have BC with all on my laptop, but I'd rather use one tool.

2. Is there a measuring tool? Like the BC ruler? Or do I have to create a temporary route to understand distances to certain points?

Apart from that, I'm getting along with it. The user interface is dreadful though. Hope they hire someone to make that better in the near future.

All of MyRoutes maps are downloadable and will work off line. For example, you can download load the whole of Europe or just, say, south east France. I run all my MyRoute routes offline by defaullt. Similarly, yiu can download the route(s) and / or synchronise them with the cloud.

The length of the route ‘grows’ as you create it and is displayed.

To download the maps, you need the MyRoute Navigation app. Do you intend to navigate via the Navigstion app, running on your phone?

I am talking about MRA web planner.

No, I'm not using the app to navigate.

My appologies, I was thrown by the:

I read the A as referring to the Navigation app.

Then you can’t download the maps.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it, as all you’ll need to alter a route is your phone and an internet connection.

The web planner is entirely web based, so you need an internet connection to use it. There’s no facility to download offline maps as you can’t even get to the web planner if you’re offline.

I think i remember from another thread you have a Garmin active watch? Which will come with the explore app and downloadable maps so you can run it off line.
You are able to import GPX routes to it and edit them - and once finished you can re-export them using Garmin drive to the XT (or whichever software/Sat Nav set up you have).

Hmm? No I don't.
I have Explore, it's dreadful and I don't use it, unless - yes - there is necessity to sync some stuff to the XT, but I generally prefer to beam stuff via bluetooth (Drive).

My workflow so far has always been: plan in BC > transfer tracks and routes to XT via USB (or Bluetooth sometimes on the move).
Looking at My Route as a potential partial replacement for BC.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it, as all you’ll need to alter a route is your phone and an internet connection.

I don't exactly worry, as it is not a super common occurrence, but I prefer to have local storage for map data, etc. (Or at least having the option to)
I found myself multiple times in locations (and you don't have to get that far or exotic) with extremely slow or laggy connection, that would make the route planner unusable.

I hoped there was a way to locally cache some of the maps, but I expected this not to be the case.

Not a tragedy, can keep BC as a backup. It's on the laptop + maps anyway.

Last question is: since it is a web based app, is it possible to collaborate on the same file at the same time?

I think this is something the owners are working on.

The ‘easiest’ way perhaps, is to work off a copy and share that.

The planner on the navigation app is very easy to use on the move I bought into it when they introduced what was then called "Navigation Next" and it was bundled as an offer with the web based planner. That said, the interface of the "Route lab" is still flexible enough that you could modify a route on your phone screen (if you have signal). Its then a simple matter of downloading the route to your phone and transferring the modified route to your XT via Garmin Drive. I've only done this once sitting in a cafe in Alston Cumbria in the Pissing rain and hastily modifying a route to get into dry weather using MRA and the Metoffice weather radar. It was very simple and very liberating. A couple of years ago playing in the Pico's my two friends and I planned routes on the fly over a couple of beers on an Ipad in the hotels we were staying. It really is the ideal tool for staying flexible on tour. In years gone by I'd have tended to pre plan a lot of the routes and stick to them more rigidly.

There are only two areas the planning app could be significantly improved.......in my view of course. How POI's are handled and the amount of information that can be stored with them (Basecamp is way better at this.) and how tracks are handled again basecamp is better for this. For what I do with regards route planning its great, and much more convenient than basecamp.

Nice. That would be extremely useful.

It’s still (as at at 28 days ago) a work in progress.

In separate threads, MyRoute (who are very public with their news) are talking about a big update of the Routeplanner app, similar I guess to the very successful updating of the Navigation app.

PS If you intend to embrace MyRoute, joining the forum is worthwhile.

Yes thanks, I found that thread too.
I'll check later if they have a public development roadmap (most of those softwares and startups do).
