is there anybody out there??! I got one and have had metal fragments too and have just been told by two dealers that fragments are not unusual and to run it and see. So was it the washer fragments that crunched the gog that torn the crank? What milage had you done? I'm on the verge of pulling off the covers for a good look.
David,
sorry for not replying until now.
Part one
DO NOT TAKE THE ENGINE APART !!!
Otherwise you will not have a leg to stand on when you tell BMW you've
found the fault.
This is (I know) is a catch 22 situation
but you must not take it apart yourself.
(I found out the hard way and I would not wish this situation on anyone)
The only option you have is to let the fault develop and let the motor
lock up and fail.
Part two.
DO NOT TAKE THE ENGINE APART !!!
These machines came with a very good two year warranty,
that allows you to do your own servicing whilst keeping the warranty valid.
BUT !
If you do your own servicing you will not get any goodwill fixes from
BMW UK once that warranty has expired. (as mine had [by two months] when the engine failed)
I was told in no uncertain terms to Farkle off.
Exact words were "you didn't pay any of our dealers to do your servicing,so we won't fix it for free now the warranty has expired" (me . . . .GULP)
If you are in the same situation as i was then please PM me
as i have loads of information on fixing them yourself,
much cheaper than BMW will quote you.
Also could you post up a picture of the metal that has come out.
I may be able to tell where it came from and save you a little time/money.
Mine has now done 27000 miles,
3000 since the re-build and all is well.(touch wood). . . . . (taps head)
