Hi all. Need small advice. I start project about year back but only now got time to do bits, at this moment i'm on rear crank seal, I took old one out no bother, place new in but about 3mm deeper than old one. Now its dilemma, will I get new one and reinstall or this one be ok sins its bit smaller than original. any advice . O bike is 97' r 1100

Doesn't your model already have double rear crankshaft seals? My '98 has double radial seals.

I'd take it out and install new. Oil must pass through the channels just beneth the rear seal, you have a risk of clogging it up with the rear seal deeper 3mm as you say, see on this pic the hole and compare the wear-marks of the old seal - just few mm inside and it's pretty much clogged up I reckon:

It's critical job enough to do it properly. You don't want to come back there soon and splitting the bike into half again, along clutch destroyed with leaking oil.

Radial seals are always tight in the center, you must pre-form them into shape with your fingers and oil before installing. See here.

Good luck,
Margus
