Do i fit crash bars or cylinder guards and which ones ?

or do i fit both, the dealer says engine bars can do more damage if the bike goes down the road but i am thinking more on the lines of a slow speed drop,if i had a big off, well thats what i pay insurance for,

Good choice

If dealer will not fit for free then they are very simple to fit yourself

When I've only had head protectors I've found that the cylinder heads quite often still get scuffed when the bike goes over and you then have the cost of replacing both if you want to keep it mint

So I now use crash bars only. They provide much better protection to the head in a straightforward topple and if the magnesium cover does get scuffed its surprisingly inexpensive to replace.

My bike came with the BMW plastic protectors and I have some SW Motech ones fitted. Never had to use them yet . Some guys like them some don't. For £139 for the crash bars its cheap insurance and very easy to install. Fully fuelled GS weights 240kg - I don't think a little piece of plastic or metal over the cylinder guard is going to counter the laws of physics. The engine bars transfer the force away from the engine and if you get some make sure they are braced (i.e. connected).

The big question is do you paint the bars black?

I got them thinking the bike would be heavy and hard to control but it doesn't feel that way to me now... still cheap insurance on resale value or repair!

New bike came with BMW head protectors. Fitted AltRider crashbars
from Nippy Normans. Video on ebay and very easy to fit.
Look and feel very substantial.

I am looking for stainless steel crash bars that are mounted as securely as the Alt rider bars but will fit with a full remus exhaust system and allow the valve covers to be removed when in situ. On 09 1200gs Any Ideas.

Closest I can think of are TT but they don't offer as much protection.

Thanks for reply I prefer the alt rider mounts they look a lot stronger that the TT but wont fit with the remus pipes.
I have given up searching I think it will have to be a DIY job and put on some solid mounts and bolt the bars to the mounts with M8 s/s srews so that in a bad off the M8s act as shear screws rather than damage the engine and frame.

Just written off my second set.

Mk 1s broke off on stationary spill.

Mk 2 replacements have just broken in 2 places without and impact.

Bars for me from now on.

Did anyone get a definite answer on which bars fit the 2012 model? I've just ordered an R1200GS Triple Black and can't seem to find a definite answer on which ones fit.

I noticed that SW-Motech now say that they no longer require removal for servicing so I emailed Nippy Norman's to find out if they stock bars that fit the 2012 bike. He replied saying he can get them in 2 weeks if SW-Motech list them which doesn't really help as I don't know if they do.

I did a bit of a search around but not being familiar with the GS and its model history I wasn't sure when the current version was released and hence what year onwards accessories will be listed for (e.g. 2010 on etc.)

Ideally I'm looking for something reasonably cheap and that doesn't require removal for servicing. I've bought the bike as it fits me and my severe joint issues, not for going off road so that doesn't need to be a factor.
