Crash Bars advise

ENGINE BARS

Did anyone get a definite answer on which bars fit the 2012 model? I've just ordered an R1200GS Triple Black and can't seem to find a definite answer on which ones fit.

I noticed that SW-Motech now say that they no longer require removal for servicing so I emailed Nippy Norman's to find out if they stock bars that fit the 2012 bike. He replied saying he can get them in 2 weeks if SW-Motech list them which doesn't really help as I don't know if they do.

I did a bit of a search around but not being familiar with the GS and its model history I wasn't sure when the current version was released and hence what year onwards accessories will be listed for (e.g. 2010 on etc.)

Ideally I'm looking for something reasonably cheap and that doesn't require removal for servicing. I've bought the bike as it fits me and my severe joint issues, not for going off road so that doesn't need to be a factor.

Thanks,
Dae.

The lower engine bars AFAIK fit all years regardless of manufacturer, uppers are different after 2007 model year, value for money wise theres a guy in vendors section makes nice bars for £125 either black or silver, names brent something, company are called stalkoffers or something simiar, will try to find u a link.:thumb

Thanks for the tip, but before posting I contacted Stahlkoffer but they came back and said that their bars don't fit a 2012 model, which is what prompted me to find out which ones do. Their reply was "Unfortunately our crash bars do not fit the latest BMW R1200GS. They changed the design and so the crash bars rub against the sensor."

I figured that if they say theirs don't fit there must be a difference somewhere but I'm unsure what and when the change came about.

ive got those and i reckon there the dogs watsits, highly reccomended:thumb

+1 for MachineArt X-heads :thumb2

I put engine bars on the 1200 for our Alaska trip in 2009 and was glad of them when the bike went over on a steep camber in SF :D. However, if you get your bike serviced by a main dealer, you should bear in mind that they will charge you if they have to take them off and put them back on in the course of servicing the bike. (Also, if they aren't fitted perfectly, or have taken a knock, they can cause increased vibration through the bars.)

I took my engine bars off once we got back to the UK, and left them off.

I have already ordered the head protectors, but was after a bit more peace of mind.

I noticed on Nippy's site that the SW-Motech ones say they have been redesigned so they don't require removal for service. It says 2010 on, but when I emailed him he said they could get them "if SW-Motech list them", which kind of makes me think that the 2012 must be different from 2010 otherwise I figured he'd have just confirmed the "2010 on" ones would fit.

I'll drop SW-Motech an email and see if they come back to me.

Thanks,
Dae.

Got the following reply from SW-Motech:

"The crashbars suitable for your bike are the SBL.07.562.100 and they are in Black.

You may be required to remove them for a service but we are not sure. I have attached the fitting instruction for you to view and see if there will be any problems getting to the main parts of the bike that need to be checked and serviced."

My only confusion is when searching for the part number given I get loads of hits on various websites but they all come back as showing the bars as silver rather than black.

Give the H&B's a try and consider the top/tank guards for extra protection. I've laid her down on both sides with the Hepco Beckers (she is awfully big and I've taken her a few places were terrain exceeded ability), and have not experienced any damage to the bike.

Do you know if the H&B bars need removing for servicing and if they fit a 2012?

I didn't think that there was any difference on the 2012 but when Stahlkoffer specifically pointed out that their bars didn't fit it made me realise that there must be something that's changed - unfortunately I don't know what that change is or how to spot it.

Thanks,
Dae

The valve covers come off without having to loosen or adjust the H&B crashbars. Mine are mounted on a 2009 model. I did a boatload of research before I bought these and the general impression that I got from searching here and on ADVRider was that most folks were satisfied - I seem to recall that the attachment points were more robust than other models (TT and BMW). I've not witnessed my bike sliding down the road while I follow it on my ass, so I can't attest to crash worthiness.
