Crash bars

I'm looking for some crash bars for my 2005 gs 1200 and there's a lot on eBay the ones that I like are heed £230 for engine and tank from Poland has anyone bought these as I'm a bit reluctant to buy them with it being a foreign seller
 
I have Touratech bars on my '06 GS and although they're expensive they're really nice quality - stainless steel rather than painted mild steel. I keep my bike tidy but there's no doubt the bars do get the odd knock which is where the stainless excels. No upper section available though, although I've no need for the upper bars anyway.
The Heed bars are around £110 for the lowers only, that's quite inexpensive but may also be pretty average quality which you may not find out until a few years down the road (I have no experience of Heed bars).

I crashed mine at less than 15mph and rammed the RHS crash bar back so far it's distorted the Touratech cylinder protector. Any faster and the rocker cover would have been toast. So much for crash bars being protective.
I plan to fit the Wunderlich head protectors that have replaceable impact pads. The lower crash bars will be getting chopped back so they can't do any more harm if I ever REALLY need them.

Ouch!,which crash bars did you have fitted?
 
I crashed at "over 30mph" in a low side spill, my Hepco & Becker bars ground down nicely and saved the head. Repaired with a piece of mild steel pipe as a skin welded over the damaged bit and some silver spray paint. Good bars IMO.

I crashed at 100 mph ( combined impact speed - 3 door hatch hit me a glancing blow) and the Hepco bars peeled off , bent round my boot and attempted to hold onto my foot as I did a not very graceful dive over the bars and surfed off down the road on my side. I'm not sure you could expect any bars to completely protect at that speed but my leg would have been better off with cylinder head protectors. Bikes can be replaced. Legs cant.
 
That's a fair comment, I can't see any bars being designed to protect at 100mph worth of force.

My H&B bars also did a nice job on an Audi A4 car door skins when sideswiped whilst alongside me in moving traffic, head covers would have been just as effective. :D
 
My GSA has standard crash bars. I've bought a new (used) set, but seriously intend to have the lower loops cut back and then fit cylinder protectors tough enough to actually protect the soft rocker covers.

The engine crash bars are another bike tradition but not really suitable for the job. The outer end has to move less than 1 inch before it will hit and break the vulnerable rocker cover yet the leverage on the inner end of the crash bar is huge.
From an engineering point of view they can never really provide the protection expected of them.
