Crashbars - give me the lowdown.

On the back of this and the talk of 'necessary' mods on the photos of F800's and bearing in mind the time of year, I have gone and pushed the button on a set of Adv spec crash bars.

I never felt that comfortable using my old 1150GSA when it was slippery/icy as it was so fecking heavy. The F800 I plan to use pretty much all the year so better I prepare for an off than don't.

Hopefully though, I'll never have to come on here and thank you all for 'forcing' me to spend this cash on the crash bars ... :)

Nice one, they seem to get an overwhelmning thumbs up on here....if you spotted a deal can you pm me with where you bought them please. Perhaps let us know how you get on with the fitting?

A good question ukgser73, I always suspected a big crash will cause the bars to shear off the taped lugs on the engine causing a write off, I don't know what the insurance company would say if they do. However, after looking at the pictures etc I think its time to re consider.
I dropped mine (F800) without any bars and a small knock snapped of the radiator mountings (super glued back on) and did quite a lot of damage to the side panels. Bars would probably have prevented most damage.
My wife high sided hers (F650 no bars) a few weeks ago on to the right hand side and did no damage at all. Thats probably because the 650 is so much narrower at the radiator.
Not all crash bars work, last weekend my friend slid off his Suzuki V strom, this is fitted with factory supplied crash bars as standard. The side panels were fist to hit the road sustaining heavy damage, the foot rest snapped off and the mud guard and screen scratched. The bars did not have a scratch on them and did nothing to protect.
Ouch, and thats exactly what i would like to avoid. I'm pretty sure i'm going to get some of these in the next week or two.

Has anyone experienced any negative results from having crashbars fitted, such as engine block damage, threads stripped or anything else?

Sure . No problem. On the ADVRider forum they get a huge thumbs-up and first time fitting seems to be around 30-40 minutes with an estimated 15 minutes once you've done it once .........

They should arrive tomorrow or Friday so I'll fit them on Saturday and report back with comments and photos Sat or Sunday :thumb2

Oh, I got them from Adv Spec and total cost was £206 with VAT and shipping. Cheaper by far than plastics and engine casings !

Dave

I wouldn't be without them.

Fitted the ones from Nippy Normans (SW Motech?) last year, nothing happened until 2 weeks ago when turning right off main road, the bike cut out (yes, THAT problem) and I ended up almost highsiding but ended up on my arse. Although, luckily, it was slow, the bars took the full impact and absolutely nothing got touched other than a scratch on the bars themselves.

So a big :clap from me for these things.

Hi, I'm expecting my bars to arrive today. :bounce1

Anyone have an opinion on whether or not i should use an anti-seize compound for the steel bolts as they'll be going into an aluminium engine body ?

Thanks,
Dave

Bars

Glad to hear th motec bars are ok just got somre from Nippies but not yet fixed on the machine (from another forum a bmw but musnt mention the model in the 1150 section!) Don't use the 1150 adventure bars apart from bike falling over in a crash at speed they will dig in and flip it over and smash every thing (bars ok though!). I've done it even after Mr S. warned me about it, thought I won't do that, but a dog had different ideas!.

Well, the bars arrived today (actually Friday but there was no-one about to sign for them ).

Just nipped into the garage to fit them and it took less than 30 minutes. VERY straightforward and meaty as fook ! A pair of thumbs from me :thumb2:thumb2

No real point in posting photos as others have already done that.

Congrats Dave, glad it all went well. Did you use threadlock in the end, and did the main engine bolts go in just fine?

No, haven't used threadlock at this point. I probably will at Xmas when I have some time off and will give the bike a full fettling.

Yep, everything fitted together spot on. Put left side on and tightened. Put right side on but left it loose til I fitted the cross bar but didn't really need to.

I know I have stumpy 32" legs but you'd have to have fairly long legs to have knee contact with the bars.

The fit also allowed me to keep my oil cooler protector in place. Bonus ! :)

Hi, new to all this biking stuff. Bought a F650GS(2010) to get me started. As I'm new to it I thought it best to fit a pair of these
http://www.nippynormans.com/product...ars-f800gs-and-f650gs-08-on-black-swm-cb800gs
They were delivered in about two days, took me half an hour to fit them, the instructions( even though in German) were straight forward enough, just take your time as all the bolts/washers are different sizes??
Looks great, not tested

Welcome! I did the same earlier in the year - a fantastic bike and still love it. Fingers crossed you'll not test those bars!

None - horrible things that inevitably look like they've beem made in someones shed. Aftermarket ones very rarely fit properly and are a waste of space just adding more weight to the bike.
You'l probably won't be able to buy seperate replacement parts apart from the BM ones and then you end up with a battle scarred looking bike, unless you shell out for a new set.
Usually cause more consequentle damage than if none were fitted in the first place.

Got SW motech crash bars on my 800. They've done everything they're meant to do and ive tried them out several times. The big thing as already mentioned is the radiator protection provided. After a small off last year in the Alps, i got up and rode away. Without the bars it would certainly have been BMW recovery
