Anybody out there got experience (or even just an opipion!!!!) on:

In the case of a slow (ie 10 or 20 mph) slide type crash as happens say on a roundabout due to diesel or ice is it better to have panniers on or off (cost and injury) - I've got the standard black plastic ones.

The reason for asking is simply that I do not normally have them on but maybe during winter I should.

Cheers

Been there done that almost a year to this day in the delightful environs of Shropshire on a mud laden lane.

I was with OE placcy panniers, no engine bars net result:

One cracked and split lid, one broken rail and one heavily gouged pannier lid on the opposite side. To sort them out I needed a new lid and a new rail but instead I opted for something else altogether :D

To be honest I can't see a reason not to have the panniers on all the time. I just like being able to carry round my feck-off-big-chain, a spare pair of gloves and a set of waterproofs. You never know when you might need them - especially in winter.

I run with a Non-fango top box and engine bars, (in the interest of science) Ive tested your theory, and can say that the bike goes down and slides along very nicely on the bars and top box, net result slight scuffing to bars and topbox.

I put my feck-off-little-lock etc... in my top box and leave the panniers at home (which is a good thing since I've got my panniers from my old RS and still haven't got around to fitting an exhaust lowering bracket because I'm far too bone idle to get on and actually do anything, much preferring to privatise...er, prevariate...er, waste time on other things such as sitting on the sofa eating biscuits, drinking endless cups of tea, staring into space, 'surfing' the net and all sorts of other activities which end up with me not getting the job done).

:D
