Hi all

Going to Romania this June and just looking at routes back. We have 2 days to get from Arad area in Romania to Salzburg and are considering a route through South Hungary then into Croatia and Slovenia before North on motorway to salzburg.

Anyone help with comments on general condition of roads and suggested routes in this area.

Thanks in advance.

I found the roads in both countries to be mostly fine. The local maps available from tourist offices were pretty helpful.

Slovenia is in the EU now. Lots of investment in their infrastructure. Even minor roads seemed to have a decent surface and they were busy replacing the surfaces in the main tourist area when I was there in 2005.

In Croatia, the main routes are pretty good. Superb road from Zagreb to Pula, over some impressive viaducts. The roads in rural areas can be a bit dodgy in places. Short sections of gravel or surfaces scored with some sort of tool to give grip for cars but a PITA on a bike.

I suggest these as possible ways to spend your 2 days:
1. Head for the Plitvice Lakes National Park http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plitvice_Lakes where you'll find plenty of accommodation in the neighbouring towns & villages. Get up early the following mornig for a walk around the lakes. The ride up to the Sloovenian border and ride from Postojna to Kransjka Gora via Bovec and the Triglav NP
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triglav_National_Park From KG you can blast up the scenic Austrian motoraway (buy a vignette for 7 Euros) to Salzburg
2. Alternatively, leave Croatia for another day and spend a night in the Triglav NP. It's one of my favourite parts of the Alps. You could spend the day exploring the park then blasting up the motorway as above.
