Crossrail 2

Because a lot of the ‘stuff’ we have got, is really not very good and ill suited to the crowded island we have today. I am sure lots of people criticised Brunel and his railway, when the road to Bristol was rutted and potholed in the 1830’s.
Indeed, a crowded island with a rapidly diminishing supply of ground to build new stuff on.

I don’t actually object to new stuff but the way successive governments manage it and the tax payers money funding it.

Indeed so.

I like high speed trains but HS2 made (and makes) no sense whatsoever. Likewise, the crazy move to create ‘smart’ but highly dangerous motorways, with no hard shoulders.

Yup, tax payers’ money funds it or part of it (or, more likely, vast loans ie. governmental debt) but somebody has to pay for it.

The much bigger issue, as with HS2 is the cost and, more importantly, the waste. Everyone wants nuclear power stations (very, very expensive and nobody wants to live next door to one) and good roads (very expensive, and nobody wants to live next door to one) and lots of power (which requires expensive pylons, which nobody wants to live near)…. and….. and….. and…… and so the bills for what everyone wants mount and mount and mount….. but nobody wants to pay taxes…… I’m very far from being a Socialist and have lost faith in the Big C Conservatives….. but any fool can see the misfit between the multiple wants and the money available, irrespective of their voting colours.

PS I am delighted to hear the rumours over Crossrail 2……. That it’ll boil the piss of someone nor’ o the border, is a bonus. That they’ll not be coming to the metropolis, blocking the escalators, whilst gawping in slack jawed at the electric railway is the icing on the cake :D

I can agree and understand most of that. Only the bit about the massive loans…they are paid back, interest and all, hy the same tax payers. ie all of us, the oft ignored electorate.

You’ll be missed, I’m sure.

:comfort

Enjoy the fast transit, London to Paris, on the train. Why didn’t you fly to Paris and miss London out entirely?
My wife doesn’t fly hence the necessity for the London bit. The rest of the journey will be much nicer though.

It is posted in the South East section of the forum, but welcome anyway.

You seem to dislike the Southeast of the country but want to use our stations, infrastructure and facilities paid for and used by a lot it's inhabitants because they are convenient for you. I'm sure lots of people from this end of the country go up to your part of the country, I have quite a few times, but don't go out of our way to continually run it down, it's nice but I wouldn't want to live there. If it's too much of a fag to come down to the South East can't you get a train to Hull or some other North Sea port and take a ferry to pick up a train on the other side? It would save all that stress putting a dampener on the start of your trip.
That was my preference but we have done that once this summer and will be doing it again in winter. So unfortunately the south it is this time but only for an hour luckily.

Except stuff like the Dartford crossing and probably the new Silvertown tunnel, it's a bind to have to pay a toll but it's the users that pay for it, it's maintenance and a bit of bunce to the investors, a fairer option?

Watch out for the horrible London seagulls, they’ll all be swooping down after that big chip on your shoulder :D

I can’t really see how not liking somewhere is a chip on one’s shoulder. I don’t like Bradford either so I don’t go there either.
There are cities that I do like and I do visit them. There aren’t many though as I prefer countryside and scenery over buildings, traffic and crowds.

Well balanced; chip on both.
Will it be one big greedy seagull then, or two, one for each side...in some sort of sharing agreement? Socialism in action under Mr Khan and all that....

I might suggest the Royal Parks, along with the views across London from say Greenwich or Primrose Hill and, in an odd way, from the top of the London Eye and The Shard.

Strangely, London is blessed with acres of green space, from the huge parks, right down to the small churchyards and former burial grounds. Doc, when he came down, commented on how ‘empty’ London was. He’s not wrong.

But hey, if you are determined not to like it, London won’t mind. There’s plenty more that do….. generating billions of pounds, to boost the Exchequer’s coffers, to subsidise everywhere else.

If you want to call over 10 million people living there empty then we have very different ideas of empty. I’m sure there are parks there but I prefer open countryside. I’m sure there are things I would like in London. Just because I prefer the countryside to cities seems to upset you Londoners for some reason.

It’s the fact that you seem to constantly mention it at every opportunity, even in unrelated threads., i find it very amusing rather than upsetting :D ..
You, a devout countryside lover and proud northerner have even managed to go out of your way into the South East section to mention it :D

I don’t go in any section. I just get new posts.

It was Doc (who lives in - and sounds - Yorkshire) who commented how empty it seemed. We walked, in all, about 12 miles, which is a reasonable hike by any standards.

Of course, if you want to arrive halfway down Oxford Street on the last weekend before Christmas or in Euston station in the rush hour, you’ll maybe needs your wits about you.

What you overlook or ignore is:

A. The big number you quote is for ‘Greater London’, which extends far beyond the London ‘post code’ area.

B. Not all the X million hit the streets simultaneously. Nor do they all hit the same location(s) at the same time. For example, there are plenty of people in say, Brentwood (Essex) at the eastern border of the map, who have zero call to go up to Town at all.

I am sitting at home at the moment, in a central London E1 post code. The windows are open. There is silence; indeed it is spookily quiet. Stepping out, I can look about 200 yards in any direction. There is nobody to be seen and no cars on the move. 19:30 on a Saturday night…. No activity at all.

:beerjug:

PS Not upset in the slightest. It seems to be you that is upset, perturbed and distressed over getting on a train at St Pancras, having arrived (I guess) at Euston or Kings Cross, which are very close together,

Quick, switch the news on...there's a zombie apocolypse......everyone's dead...or a zombie. (For the Mrs and me...London is like lots of other great cities, take a step back from the manic main touristy areas and there's much to see and few folk about...)
