Just had my gs in for its annual ( 1st) and 6k service combined. Mentioned a high pitched whine that I thought was coming from the FD area and on return was informed he Crown wheel bearing was shot. Replaced under warranty and with no quibble. Barhnstormers were exactly as you would want a dealer to be, it may cost more than other options but they really are top quality.

2010 has level plug as well as a breather,

But that is only a filler plug. If you use it as a level plug the FD will hold about 240 ml. The instructions to fill the FD (on the latest Maintenance DVD) are to use 180 ml using this plug hole.

Out of interest, the same DVD quotes the same oil as used in the FD is now specified in the gearbox.

Cheers for that, not had to change the drive oil yet so will measure what comes out.:thumb2
Would you not think that the filler plug could have been moved lower down and used as a level as well or does that seem too simple?

I have a R1200GS (05/2009) with almost 20.000Km (Haven’t made the service yet). The info you provide is very useful, although I would like to ask what were the symptoms, like have you noticed any warping noise, or any play, or anything at all.

These will help us all to have it on mind. :beerjug:

Obviously left seal leakage does not do any much damage soon. But inner seal leakage is always a bad sign and needs action very soon. The leakage shows most of the time before bearing failure (or more is damaged), but not always. I know a few who did have bearing damage without the leakage foreplay.

Guys, please do me a favour and vote here: clicky

I am glad removing your name from the member database right after voting should you who prefer. But vote, even you do not believe in polls ... do it for me :hug

With my failure the two giveaway signs were sideways play in the wheel (guessed at between 1-2mm) and a rumbling in the FD. This was checked by placing one hand on the casing below the brake caliper and spinning the rear wheel as fast as possible by the other hand. I had no oil leaks.

Thanks for your instand reply :beerjug:, the info is very good. I made the check, no evidence at all so far.
