Crown bearing failure

The complete FD unit has been replaced on my GS today... and with only 2600mls on the clock.
When the unit was initially inspected the lift at the rim was 3.5-4.0mm, and as the manual states a maximum of 1mm... it was quite clear to me that this was in excess of the manufactures specification so it needed replacement / rectification.

Interesting conversation with the dealer dealer today, in that the regional warranty manager of BM is rejecting claims of lift that are under 4mm... so he will have a fight on his hands to get my claim accepted.

what a shower... they make the rules up & change then as they go along

Do you mean sideways play when you move the wheel at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions? If yes, max movement is 1mm as stated in the manual. 4mm is excessive - find yourself a new dealer. Mine had about 1.5mm to 2mm play, no more than that and BMW just coughed up the whole repair bill. 18K on the bike and 6 months out of warranty. Go figure.

i would be interested

To know who the dealer was/is?
if its 4mm side play, left to right at the rim edge. thats just verging on suicide.
my 1150 has zero thats 0.00000mm play left to right.

The FD was replaced by Coopers and it has been replaced with the revised unit as fitted to the 2010 model... (with breather)

To clarify your question, the 4mm play in the bearing was measured at the rim edge and With hands placed at 6 & 12 o' clock.

kin hell

Donkey Carts have less play than that, Just to re-iterate my 1150 has no play whatsoever Mr Fat wallet BMW Motorcycle manufacturer if you are reading.and thats after 9 years and 30,000 miles.
4mm???,im surprised you can keep the bike in a straight line.
Does it come with a steering control or rudder?
I would be interested to know what play the unit has from new???

.

No sign of a breather or rubber cover on my 2010, read this on another thread so went straight out to the garage plugged in the old hand lamp and no breather :blast

2010 GSA registered 03/04/2010

breather

Just had my FD replaced on my 2008 GS and it has a breather - right by the brake calliper fittings.

My new FD has definitely got a breath fitted forward of the caliper....
Would be interested to know if there are any other internal differences???

I can confirm that the new unit has zero movement....thankfully

Is anyone aware of any bearing problems/failures on this unit with the breather???

My buddy took his GS in for an 18,000 service, then 2 weeks later a front tyre.
when the dealer said it needed rear wheel bearings,

he said "it was only in 2 weeks ago so why didn't you notice then?"

no reply, but they did it under warranty, bike was exactly 2 days out of W.

I have only ever had to replace a wheel bearing on a very old Harley in 35 years of biking, come on BM and get your act together.

On my 2010 GSA I've already had fitted under W....

Headlamp, 3 fuel senders, spotlamp switch, heated grip

It just doesn't give me much confidence in BMW...very poor quality!

and breathe

Here it is,

My understanding is that the breather is there ( plus the reduction in oil quantity to 180ml ) to stop the outer seal from blowing. I don't think the crown bearing runs in oil so it wouldn't make any difference over that particular failure.

Should have gone to specsavers:augie

Even that wouldn't help I'm afraid. My 2010 bike is about 8 months old and no way has it got that breather.

Having had 2 FD failures (one on a 1150) I've been quite keen on regular oil changes, especially after the first 1000 miles, just to clear out any crud.

For what it's worth, the differences on my FD compared to a '06 model are:

1) No 'level' plug on the rear of the FD.
2) A big magnet in the drain plug which has collected all the running in crud and kept the oil a nice golden colour

In spite of whatever oil volume is now recommended for the FD, exactly 200ml came out of mine, so that's how much I put back in

The RHS Crown wheel bearing is lubed by the FD oil, the LHS is a sealed ball race, though I suspect FD oil does find its way in.

180ml is the amount for all gs1200 :comfort

The reduction in oil quantity was already in place before the breather was added....

Question
Is anyone aware of any bearing issues or failures to the FD with the breather...would be interesting to know of any other internal differences.

Yeah, I realise that. I wonder why therefore the factory puts in 200ml?

If your oil has been changed by a dealer during a service you are relying on them draining the old properly and also measuring the quantities accurately. Just saying it might have been a dealer responsible for putting the oil in not the factory. I changed mine recently and left it a couple of hours to drain while I went shopping (that's after taking it for a run to get hot) and then used a syringe to measure the 180ml. If it's of any use, when I drained mine for the first time I measured only 150ml coming out!
