Cure for vibration

The reason for the "no gloves" was because the gloves might be restricting the blood to the hand that was all...

I tried some foam grips on my Yamaha. Unfortunately all I could get were barrel shaped and really uncomfortable to hold. Something cylindrical like @Beemerman59 has would be better. But for vibration they did very little. I ended up with Rox anti vibe risers which were great on a Japanese inline four but are next to useless on the Beemer. I'm guessing it must be the way the vibes move - horizontal instead of circular.

BTW my hands are still not right after a night's sleep so something has to be done PDQ.

Also, ensure your spark plugs are ok.

Riding on shite UK roads doesn't help, there's some parts of the A1 that are truly vibe inducing.

I can bitch for hours about the poor quality roads in the UK.

The bike has brand new; Plugs, Air Filter, All Oils, valve check and all Throttle bodies balanced by Scriminger. To quote Steve its "cock on"!

I know the A1 is dodgy but its vibes through the bars, not too much on feet, even without footrest rubbers. Tyres are all good and at proper pressures. Even changed them to check !

Iv'e got some grip puppies on the way so will see, if they don't work then its bye bye GS!:blast

I've been using puppies for a while now, and whilst I prefer the orignal cirumference of the OEM grips, the GPs have been a worthwhile improvement IME.

Its not as smooth as I'd like; this and the seat are the weak points of the GS IMHO.

Bye bye GS is way too extreme for me. There are solutions much cheaper than a new bike, but I dont plan to spend megabux finding the best option.

Seems to me that if some GSs are ok and others not then fitting Grip Puppies or similar- filling handlebars with lead shot and/or silicone sealant is treating the symptoms and not the disease.

If there are two basic causes for the vibration-

mechanical imbalance, being out-of-tolerance or extremes of acceptable tolerance on crank assembly and balancer shaft, or

dynamic imbalance, meaning the throttle body balance, valve clearances etc that affect engine running

Then you seem to have dealt with the first, and, sadly, the second is maybe so expensive that it'll have to be grip puppies or similar.

Apologies for not being at all helpful.

had the same problem on my 09 bike changed it for a 11 plate TC problem solved still have the puppies as i have got used to them

Does anyone know of rubber handlebar mount kit that works on a 2011 GS? The vibes are numbing my hands and I have an Iron Butt to do! Ive tried Grip Puppies but a bit to lardy on the grips for my liking.

Do you actually know its the vibes? Lots of other things can cause that problem. Carpal tunnel syndrome for example, or worn neck joints, or gripping the bars to tight, or poor posture when riding, or simply cold hands.

My right hand goes numb. I've had the carpal tunnel done. But I have noticed that if I hunch forward a bit altering the angle of my wrists on the bars, then the feeling comes back into the hand. Which suggests something to do with my neck or my shoulder, maybe a bony nodule trapping a nerve.

It could be vibration of course but if that was the cause then you would have the same problem on some other equipment - maybe chainsaw, maybe hammer drill etc. It would also depend on riding speed since different revs give different vibrations both frequency and intensity

I have thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) on the left. It was worse when I used a Yamaha 900 due to wind pressure building up the scalene muscles. It's actually improved since I got the GS. However while the Rox anti vibe risers were excellent on the Divvie 900 (the mirrors worked) they have had minimal effect on the GS. A fast ride for 2 hours x country will leave my fingers on both hands buzzing for at least 2 days. Motorway is less bad as long as I keep below 5000 revs.

The GS gas a higher amplitude vibe than the Yamaha, probably at 1/2 the frequency. Inline fours create a rocking couple. The twin just twists horizontally.

If anyone has access to vibration measuring equipment we could find out exactly what we are up against in terms of frequently direction and amplitude.

By the way the problem is worse with thick gloves. It is improved (but by no means cured) with anti slip rubber mesh wrapped around the grips.

Certain that it is a vibration as it relates to revs on the engine not just speed or wind pressure. Grip puppied have helped a bit so will see if I can live with it. If not new Caponard looks good to me:beerjug:

One more thing to check is the rear wheel bearings. My -08 developed high frequency vibrations, the kind that makes your hands numb. Then I noticed sideways play in the rear wheel. When the wheel was rotated by hand it felt like running over a washboard. Got the wheel bearings replaced and as a bonus these high frequency vibrations disappeared.
