I’ve recently acquired another R1100 (Having had a R1200) I’ve found the same transmission noise (whine on 2nd /3rd and lesser on 4th, quiet on 5th) as on my previous R1100, everything else is ok, changed the gear oil for straight 90W , but the whine still present, searching the ADV site I see some are using Redline heavy shock gear oil 250W !!! What’s the opinion of the collective on here, anybody tried it ????

Some links about it;

And a Quote;

“”Brad at <[email protected] > said that he experienced excessive gear whine noise in third and forth gears. I tried every lubricant you could think of recommended by BMW. What I found worked best was an oil called Redline heavy shockproof gear lube. You can locate this company on the web at http://www.redline.com. Also, I recommend you call them and ask for Dave in technical support and he will explain to you how this oil works. I was very pleased with the performance of reducing gear whine and easier shifting of the trans over all. If youre that frustrated with your transmission I suggest you try this product. You won't find a better product for you bike.””

I have considered trying that stuff, Demon tweeks sell it, not particularly expensive.

noise

I rather like that sound in 3rd gear. Makes me think of being in an ME 109 up to no good.:)

Got mine on special offer from Opie Oils as a bulk buy. Stuck it in my '96 1100RS. I can't say it made as much difference as did the Castrol 75/140 fully synthetic oil I had in before. The main reason I use it in the RS is because it has the M94 box with the open taper roller bearings. I figure anything that will help them last a bit longer is worth trying.

My 850 GS whines like a good 'un in the intermediate gears and has done almost from new. As this has the later box with sealed bearings I haven't yet bothered sticking Redline in it, though again I did try Castrol 75/140 which improved the change though it didn't reduce the whine. FWIW neither did molyslip. Basically I just put up with it now and anyway the 850 is so low-geared I spend most time in top, which is quiet.

It's gearoil. Not magical sound deadening acoustic fluid :D
