Any recomendations / advice on custom earplugs greatly appreciated! there are quite a few providers and loads of hype.

I'm getting though disposables at quite a rate and SWMBO cant get them to fit her tiny lugs!

Ultimate are pretty good. - about £60 for the basic custom plugs, - more if you want audio.

The ear moulding takes about 10 mins, and then take around 4-6 weeks to deliver. Obviously you need to be there. They put a small plug like cigarette filter down your ear to protect it, then inject some goo to take a cast. After it sets in a few mins, it all peels away no ,mess at all. Once they deliver the plugs, you get the mould back so if you need any more you can reuse it.

Been using these for years, I never set off without them:thumb2

Love them. Popping down to their HQ Monday to be fitted for a pair with speakers :beerjug:

Green Leopard monitors - if only for the opportunity of the lovely Fil S squirting his fluid into my lugholes :D

I use custom ear plugs from ACS and yes they are worth it - If your wife does not ride too often it might be worth her trying to get hold of some childrens ear plugs. I struggle to get normal ear plugs in for some reason but I found these much easier. I think i got some from Ebay - they are purple.

Thanks for all the input, will be chating to Ultimate forthwith.

I've just taken delivery of a pair of Ultimate's monitors (speakers built in). They are fantastic, shutting out unwanted sound and delivering Autocom and music to a very high standard.

I was really impressed with the muting of wind noise and the clarity of audio on the Ultimate Ear monitors (about £150) but the quality of the components and the company's customer service leaves much to be desired.

Within nine months the cables frayed and the company replaced them.

Several months later they frayed again and this time I had to pay £60 to have them replaced.

Then after another trip they frayed again and although I sent them back for repair more than four weeks before I was due to leave for Morocco, they couldn't get their act together to get them repaired in time.

Not a happy bunny, and definitely would advise you to look elsewhere.

Should have gone to Specsavers.

No honest, Specsavers do a similar product. It's called DuoCom, and they will do the "squirt gum in your ear" thing, and produce a pair of custom moulded plugs (with or without speakers) for around £150. Hunt around for a branch that also does an audiologist service (mainly for hearing aids). Check out their website as well.

Had mine over a year now. Wear them every day for 2 - 3 hours all in. Makes listening to your mp3 player far more comfortable.

Sadly, this is close to my experience with Ultimate...basic sound thru monitoirs was great and they did a good job of insulating me from outside noise.....

BUT

like Tim cables started to break down and cost of repair (to what was clearly a very poor design), was ridiculous....so I spent the money on a pair of Green leopards....sound just as good etc etc....
And
if by chance one of the sound tubes comes adrift, its a simple job to replace it in the earplug!!!!!!:thumb
only downside is the tubes from the sound boxes("speakers") can pick up noise if you do not position the tubes etc inside your jacket to stop them rattling around
alo fil s provides very good support and back up

I do hate to repeat bad news but my experience is the same; wires fraying seem to be a common fault, but not one they've been able to prevent. I waited years before enentually going the whole custom monitor route. They performed brilliantly for both sound reproduciton and isolation, but in hindsight a pair of high end in ear type headphones like the Etymotic ER6i's or Shure equivalent are 90% as good, for less money and more robust.

My Ultimates were returned for the second time (still in warranty) three weeks ago, and I've been told to expect to wait another two weeks.

I've recently ordered one of Intaride's new Integra headset's to see how they work out.

my UE monitors suffered the same fate. stripped insulation near the earpiece, but still working at about 2 1/2 years old.
looks to me like the thin, inner signal wire stretches more than the thicker braid which is the earth. this allows the braid to bunch and cut through the sheath where it bends as it enters the earpiece.

currently with UE being replaced at a cost of £45.

Hi

I sell Green Leopard earplugs so I'm not unbiaised....

Let's address a couple of points:

1) You're getting through a lot of disposable earplugs:

In the long term there will be a cost saving in having custom plugs. In the short term you will have an increase in comfort

2) Your partner sounds like she has narrow ear canals:

Custom plugs sound like the right way to go for her too...

My advice:
1) Do what you are already doing. Ask around, have a look, get informed. Despite them being a direct competitor, I have no problem at all with the quality and price of Ultimate Ear. There are other companies I couldn't honestly say the same about. Personally I turn plugs around in a week to 10 days usually and have never really understood the delay with UE - but then I guess their lab is busier than I am.

2) Green Leopard have, for a number of years now, offered an air tube alternative to the cable version of the monitors. From your original post, this is not something you've asked about but seeing as it has come up... To be fair to UE, I have seen that they now offer (or will do very shortly) an air tube solution too. Mine are £120 so nowhere near the prices quoted above. Since we introduced these I haven't had a single set returned for wear or damage. We also used to get a few returns on the cable version - they just don't work for bikers (or others who use helmets)

3) Having a copy of your ear impressions can be a good thing, it can also be a bad one. Your ears continue to grow, so if you have some impressions made and lose your earplugs withing a couple of months then having a set of impressions is good. However if you've had your impressions for three or four years and you have new plugs made, they are effectively three or four years old. You'd probably do better having new ones made that fit your ears now.

4) Guarantee, support and backup. Thanks for the kind comments above. I do try to help people out. Check to find out what is / is not included in your guarantee and what you will be expected to pay should things go wrong.

I hope that helps :thumb2

Just looking for plugs, not monitors (at the moment). :hide

Any idea on costs and how to get impressions made?

Well speaking as an Ultimate Agent I'll offer the following:

1. Fragility: There is so much you can do to protect what is a delicate piece of equipment from robust usage. I've seen some very odd ideas about how roughly treated their monitors can be. Odd given the cost of the item and the clear need to be careful in usage.

If better care was taken in using them there, ensuring good cable management in usage and storage it would ensure less stress on plug at cable entry point.

2. Improvement: As a matter of course now UE's monitors are now reinforced with another outer sleeve at the cable entry point to act as a stressed member. Time will tell if we have cracked it this time. Its an evolving process refining and improving a product.

3. Alternative: As my learned friend and competitor (the order being deliberate) points out Ultimate now do an air-tube monitor which I have had in use for 6 months now, cheaper than the electrical monitor and more robust having no moving or electrical parts within the plug or thin cables.

Cheaper to produce, cheaper to repair should that be necessary but not as good audio wise as the electrical ones, certainly good enough for voice (phone/sat nav/intercom/bike2bike but music doesn't touch the quality of the driver in the plug monitor though it could be argued good enough for on bike use, especially when interfacing with a intercom system as opposed to directly into a music source.

But there is now a choice. Both of the above are produced from a mould derived directly from an impression of your ear. The fall-back position of having a separate mould are clear, you want another product you have a mould, you damage or lose one you have a mould and can replace the product without having to see us again or having to go through the chair, although as Fil says a mould has a 'shelf life' of 3-5 years as cartilage continues to grow.

4. Delays: We're a very busy company, comes with the territory of being the market leader in the leisure market and considered product of choice for many in industry and the security forces. And the production of all our products are done in-house, no outsourcing to a 3rd party with no quality control to unknown sources. Many of our competitors on the leisure side are front-end order taking agents/hobbyists even with little more to their operation than a a sales pop-up, a small bag of kit for impression taking and then off it goes to someone else to produce, our competitors in a commercial sense are labs producing hearing aids or industrial plugs on a Europe wide scale.

The company is going through significant expansion right now to increase production and reduce lead times and also to increase accessibility into us by way of a network of audiologists throughout the UK and an increasing number of our own trained and accredited otoscopy and impression taking technicians.

5. Improvements: We recognise at times we have short-comings and try to reduce them when they are identified to us, getting to the top of the pile is the easy bit, staying there is the challenge and a constant programme of improvement in both the products and the process is paramount to this.

If you have issues with your products from Ultimate or the service you have received I offer you here and now an opportunity to be heard to see how we can remedy things for you. My PM box is always open to you for this.

I was a customer of UE products for 5 years before I worked for them and bought for hard cash all their motorcycle products so I know and appreciate there is a hard decision to pay out for a premium product, personally I believe them to be worth every penny I paid for them.

Ultimately (if you excuse the pun) do your research, compare the market and make your own decision, it is your money after all and whoever you buy from will want a decent chunk of it.

The important thing is protecting your hearing, something Fil (Schiannini) and I always agree on :thumb

I went to my local audioligist and had impressions made for £20 and then sent them away to Ultimate and have been really pleased with the result.

Call our Sales Admin Team at the office, tell them where you're located and they'll do two things:

1. Tell you if one of our own impression taking agents is coming to your area soon (we are often at dealers/shows/IAM groups).

2. Advise you of the location of our nearest networked audiologist to you and offer to make an appointment on your behalf to visit them for impression taking, this service involves a local impression taking charge which will be advised prior to booking for you.

Just for the record ... and I am biased

The earplugs I provide are not produced by taking an impression of your ear and having that sent away for a mold to be made, to then make your earplug

Rather the Instamold material used is injected in to your ear and then with 'in house' finishing it becomes .... your earplug :thumb2
Less process's therefore for discrepancies to creep in :thumb2

As for the ear monitors I use the OTS (On The Spot) monitors where the speakers are on your chest, so to speak, with fine soft tubes (aka stethoscope style) up to your custom made earplugs for perfek music up to your lugs... therefore no fraying of wires... sorted :thumb
