my UE monitors suffered the same fate. stripped insulation near the earpiece, but still working at about 2 1/2 years old.
looks to me like the thin, inner signal wire stretches more than the thicker braid which is the earth. this allows the braid to bunch and cut through the sheath where it bends as it enters the earpiece.

currently with UE being replaced at a cost of £45.

i have just got my UE monitors back and it appears that they now have reinforcing on the problem area of the first bend out of the ear:

Another vote for ACS.

I use their Biopact protectors.

Great product.I can where them all day and not know they are in.

They cut noise extremely well and are still like new after 3 years use.

Main website is here.

Everybody should read this:

If you don't need built in speakers or fancy colours, try the Audiology Dept of your local hospital. My sister in law had a pair made there for about £15.

I've been riding legally for 45 years and personally I'd rather risk going deaf, but that's my choice. What did you say?
