If i upload BMW UK dealer Custom POI's, will it delete all the others? so, is it that you can only have one set of POI's on the unit at any one time?
Is this right :nenau

And,
On my unit, 2720, i have City Navigator NT Europe maps,
with V8 Mapsource on my PC,
When i get V9, do i send this to my unit?
Thanks for any help.

You put all your various groups of POI's into 1 folder and then upload from that folder. My folder has BMW dealers, Gastro-pubs and NT properties at the moment, for example.

i think the mod should have all the answers - he's a real guru.

try sending him a PM directly if you need a quick answer. . :thumb

Mapsource route drawing software stays on your PC and never moves!!!!!!!!!!
When you get City Navigator NT V9 maps , they will be downloaded to your PC and to your unit.
Unless something changes in my travel plans, I shall stick with NT V8.0 and upgrade to version 10 or 11. The roads that I use do not justify going with every single upgrade.

thanks john,
they are all in the same folder, but i can only have one set of POI's ata time in my mapsource POI list and on the map source map, is this right, or am i doing it wrong :nenau

also, i manually add a waypoint on my mapsource map, but if i close it and re-start, they are deleted :nenau

Thanks guys, i am reading the TFM and Playing with the mapsource, but i dont understand some of it,
Rumour has it, that V9 will have the spanish roads on it, so i need that. what i dont understand is, is this the mapsource V9 or the maps on my 2720 unit? or are they both connected? :nenau

This was posted a while back by a very wise man.....

For the benefit of new GPS users: You have 4 different types of software that are involved in a Garmin GPSR that shows street level detail, such as the StreetPilot models. These 4 types of software are:

1) System Software ("Firmware") for the GPSR itself. This is what this posting refers to. System software is downloaded over the internet and arrives on your computer as a compressed program file. You double-click on it, and the compressed file "expands". Then, you connect your GPSR to your computer with the cable, and download the new system software to the GPSR. This only has to be done once, the GPSR will never forget it, and you cannot erase it. This software is stored inside the GPSR, not on the data chip. This software tells the GPSR what to do when you press the buttons, how to figure out how to get from A to B, when to beep, what colour to use when drawing the map on the screen, stuff like that.

2) The MapSource Program. You can also find and download the MapSource program on the same page you find and download the GPSR specific software. MapSource is the tool that is used to view maps on your computer, and to transfer maps, waypoints, and routes to your GPSR. MapSource contains no maps. When you update the MapSource program, you don't have to do anything with your GPSR (just leave it in your car), because you are only updating the program that runs on your computer.

3) The map products themselves, such as CityNavigator, CitySelect, MetroGuide, and others. You buy these on a CD, you never download them from the internet. They cost money. You'll know when you have bought one, trust me. When you buy new map software, you usually load it onto your computer's hard disk, and after that is done, you go get your GPSR data chip, and transfer the new maps (with all the new housing estates, watering holes, and cathouses on them) from your computer's hard disk to your data chip, thus replacing all the old maps that were there. The only thing that Garmin data chips ever hold is maps, nothing else.

4) Waypoints, routes, and tracks: You make waypoints and routes yourself, using the MapSource program. (If you are experienced, you can also make waypoints and routes on the GPSR itself, without using the MapSource tool). You then transfer these waypoints and routes to the GPSR's memory (not its data chip, but another part of its memory) so you can then use these waypoints and maps as you ride around. After you have finished riding around, your GPSR will contain 'tracks' showing where you went. If you want, you can upload these tracks to your computer, using the MapSource program, and view them.

You need to understand which bit of software your dealing with :thumb

Thanks Kev,
although, it hasnt answered my questions :D
1)Why cant i upload all the different POI's to the mapsource, and save them. (they delete when i shut down the mapsource)

2)Im told, that i can register after V9 is released and download the latest maps onto my unit. so, the mapsource on my PC must also be updated so i can use the same maps on both.
Bear with me

Waypoints are the things one uses to connect intermediate points on a route. They are an essential part of getting from A to B.
The 2720 is capable of holding about 500 waypoints at any time (somebody please correct me here!!). Waypoints are usually created in Mapsource as a Garmin .gdb file.

POI's such as Speed Camera Locations & Little Chefs are not necessarily anything to do with a specific route. The 2720 can hold 1,000's of these without using up waypoint memory. Waypoints are typically loaded in .csv format.
If you want to save these into Mapsource you can use a piece of software called POIedit www.poiedit.com to convert files from .csv format to .gpx format than can be opened in Mapsource.

For best effect, the City Navigator Maps on your PC and the 2720 should be the same.
There are Spanish roads in CN V8 - V9 will add more of them and more things like hotels and petrol stations. Are the roads that you need already there?

Thanks John,
Ok, POI's , on my 60CS i can simply add it on the map and it will be saved, EG. My home , with a litttle house. i tried to do this on my 2720 and when i restarted the unit, it had been erased :nenau . surley this is possible?

Also, when i tried to save Home location the unit froze

Maybe this is where the fault lies and thats why its got sent back?

I refere to a previous post. "if i want poland pain and ireland i need V9" Ive just looked at the mapsource and it is all there, roads and POI's :nenau
John, how much do you know about the POI Edit software, is it easy to use?

The unit does not sound happy at all.

POI edit is a format translator. Some websites publish POI's in TomTom format. One can use POIedit to convert to Garmin format. I've used it - in a very basic way - without help as it's quite intuitive.

Cheers john :thumb
im not looking forward to plugging my unit back in, in case it happens again.

Im getting the hang of mapsource now, just little bits here and there.
