Has anyone else experienced this or do they know what the issue is?:

Riding along minding my own business when all of a sudden everything switches off and the bike comes to a stop. I have to switch the ignition off then on again to restart. Happened 3 times in the past two weeks in very awkward (and dangerous) situations. LIGHTS GO AND POWER OFF - JUST AS THOUGH I AM SWITCHING OFF!

Any help would be appreciated.:thumb2

Holy batsh1t.
No experience of this but:
Check loose battery terminals
Check anything on the keyring tending to turn key towards off - try key only.
Check any electrical mods - I saw a thread somewhere about the underseat height bar shorting some electrics - scarey.

Go to the dealer and ask them to check the ignition switch. I believe there has been a problem with the bottom of the switch which can be repaired in 2 minutes.

Good luck

go to dealers, there is a problem with these bikes wich can be sorted by replaceing them with an 1150:thumb

There is always one...

I had an 1150, then a few other bikes before returning to a 1200.

Went for ride with mate who has an 1150, we swapped bikes, and the rose tinted spec(test)icles fell away. Ridden back to back the 12 is much better, some break, some dont (no ABS pun here)

PS: on my 1150 - under warranty I had a new clutch and gearbox seal, new tank 'cos of rust in the seam, plus a few other minor niggles. Touch wood but my 1200 has been better:augie

Thanks all - I think I will leave the 1150 for the Morris Ital Estate owners amoungst us.....

The comment about the key fob was the cause - also noticed that not turning key fully does allow ignition to come on but vibrations will take it off again. So bit of user error as well.

I'll run with the key only for a while and see if I am still alive by this time next week.

As for taking it back to the dealer (doh!) they have not seen it since it's 12,000 service and I have 38,000 on the clock now as I do my own and have saved a fortune! So I have blown the warranty anyway! Money grabbing gits as they are.... Will only go to them if utterly desperate.

Morris Ital Estate owners... great put-down! :clap:clap:clap

I'd take it to the dealers anyway. It might be hard for them jo justify why you changing your own oil and other service stuff could possibly affect a dodgy ignition switch. I'm not aware of any service items that involve checking the switch. Even if they just run it on the diagnostic and confirm there's no problem elsewhere in the electrics it'll help. And if they find a problem, put the onus on them to justify why not having it serviced at a main dealer has contibuted to the problem.

Diagnostic check wont show up a faulty ignition switch, mine didn't.
I had an Ital Estate years ago, had it put down.

whats wrong wi morris itals?did they have the same amount of probs as the 1200,s???:handbag

Not sure - I was just thinking of the old man image:augie

Anyway - have been to the dealer who has confirmed that key fob will pull key off if not fully clicked on - vibrations. Many (on all types of BMW''s) have been back about this. He did check everything and all checked out ok. Been carefull to switch fully on (with winter gloves:eek:) since and been ok. So user error or crap ignition switch?

Never had this trouble with my Ital ....:augie

My God - they have an Ital club...... http://www.morrismarina.org.uk - with a Chariman and everything.

Should we send this link to all 1150 owners?

Just to let you all know that it has not done it again after 1000 miles or so.

I can now do it on purpose, however!....... turn the key slowly until the ignition comes on and you will be shocked to see that it stays on without the key clicking into position. Thus the vibrations soon switch it off again when your under way:eek:

So, like me (now), in the dark and wet with thick winter gloves be sure to fully CLICK ON:rob........
