A fist post in the proper cycling section. Thank you @Paul G (BHT) for creating one.

As I have mentioned elsewhere on the forum, I have recently started to cycle to and from work just under 7 miles each way, taking just under an hour to get there and back, so a good bit of cardio workout each day. I am not cut out for a gym (not least as I am to tight to pay a silly amount in monthly membership costs) I do plenty of weight lifting at work as some will know.

Anyhow.

My current commute does include cycling along busy B roads. The state of the roads isn’t silky smooth, far from it. It is representative of a moon surface or a patchwork quilt.
The cycle lanes are barely existent, and if these are, they are just as are foot paths, taken over by farmers hedgerow or over grown with grass.

I cut through a short section of woodland (cycling prohibited) whilst playing ignorance, due to one end of the path having got no signage to indicate this, whilst the other side does have a sign, but it is the size of a beer mat.

I have looked at Google and Apple maps for cycling route suggestions, but these still take me along a busy road or through a field, not exactly ideal on a Brompton with road going tyres.

So the question is, does anybody know of an app that would show all of the existing UK cycling infrastructure (not just in London) and possibly of user added cycling suitable paths/routes?

Thank you.

Have you tried Garmin Connect route planning? They do have a cycling mode.
Also Strava has a routing tool. I never used (the routing tool) but with all things Strava it should be good and I suspect they have enough data to understand what the most commonly used cycle routes are.

Thank you Emilio.
I have Strava on my phone, need to play around with it really, but ultimately I need something that is as easy to use as Google or Apple Maps.

I haven’t tried Garmin, will look into it. Thank you.

Komoot is a good cycling mapping app. It suggest routes as well. As er minio also states Strava provides a mapping and a routing option that is very easy to use, just look at the tab “routes” it will ask you where too ….. I cant tell you if its all in the free version as I have the subscription option.

Funny enough just downloaded Komoot as well as a few other apps to have a look at.

Get Strava on your laptop and have a play. You can overlay a heat map of 'where' cyclists use most. I'd be sorely tempted to try to borrow something like a 700c or 29er hybrid type bike...pothole ridden roads and small wheels arent a good combination.
As an example....I've clicked prefer dirt...which gives me the dotted section midway thru the ride. It also give elevation change...up and down. I used it alot for planning routes where I live....as in for just about every ride. (I've never been to Uttoxeter....just used as an example) You may not have access to this sort of stuff without paying for membership however......

As others have suggested Komoot is good, also look at Sustrans (mainly longer national cycleways but may help locally) Cheers :beerjug: John B

Another one is cycle.travel
+1

I use for planning it a bit like I use myroute.app for the motorbike except I’m not paying.

We have had a few mishaps with planning bicycle rides with Google and Strava, so far so good with cycle.travel

Cycle.travel worked really well for us last month, through Cumbria.

Easy to use and for a very small donation you can choose a variety of underlying base maps to suit your activity.
