Hi all I had the cylinder head covers fitted from new, removed them to trade my 1250. There’s a rubber gasket that lives underneath that holds water against the head, and the paint was bubbling. I would remove them or dry thoroughly underneath if you want to keep them. It was dry stored, but that’s made no difference. I suppose you could also ditch the rubber bit. FYI

Had a similar issue on my 1200LC, ended up using spacers on both crash bar mounts to bring them out a little in order to allow the head covers to be loosened after a good clean to ensure no crap behind the rubbers. Ended up also having spacers under the head cover mounts to bring them out too so a gap appeared under the rubbers, allowing water to run away.

This is my rocker cover (the others side is similar) on my 2022 1250RT.

BMW have refused my warranty claim via my dealer, stating the cause as lack of proper cleaning/care. Bearing in mind the long history of similar claims, some of which have been sorted under warranty, is it worth pursuing my claim?

Apart from buying new is their an accepted repair?

I would pursue this claim. They have a duty of care. If incorrect or lack of cleaning could cause this kind of degradation then they should give some clear instruction on how to clean, and that if not done at regular intervals then this could be the result. otherwise they would have to prove it was; wrong or lack of cleaning that caused it. Did you have protective covers on there? if you did then they may have a point, if you didn't, they have no excuse. Paint of this kind, in this area should be able to withstand the weather and what it gives when used in normal/standard circumstances.

No protective covers. The dealer explained BMW has recently change their warranty policy whatever that means? The fact that this has been a re accruing issue over a long period effecting a lot of bikes may also help to support my claim. Time will tell.

Keep us posted. I’m interested in the outcome. Crazy really when you think about it. Poor if they don’t sort in with warranty.
Is it the dealer or BMW mothership making this decision. Sometimes what the dealer casts and does are 2 different things.

Contacted the dealer today to enquire if there is an Appeal process, he didn’t know but stated someone in the appropriate department would come back to me. Let’s see if they do.

I'm I were you I'd contact BMW directly. you may find the dealer made the decision without contacting them.

Thanks for the thought. I’ll give the dealer a reasonable time to reply. I have asked for copies of the photographs they sent to BMW with any emails.

Ok so I’ve spoken to the dealer who referred my claim for a second time. BMW have again refused to change the effected items under warranty stating the bike hasn’t been cared for or cleaned properly as other underside unprotected parts are showing signs of rust etc.

To replace the cylinder heads would cost approximately £250 each plus an hours labour to fit.

According to BMW this corrosion is a rare occurrence

That dosen't give any confidence in BMW. How the hell can they prove it's not been cleaned properly.

Sadly I think after 6 months the emphasis is on you to prove. I thought corrosion was covered under warranty though so this is not a good sign.

Before 6 months its on them

Crazy, it could be something they did (or didn't do) during preparation, wouldn't necessarily show up within 6 months. Think we can all agree they're not perfect when it comes to production standards.

Rather than pay £250, I'd be tempted to remove them, clean them up and have them powder coated. No-more corrosion and it wouldn't cost £250 to do.

You could always put a pair of these on;
