D-Day trip

Hello All,

The 2014 D-Day 70th inNormandy went well! Numbers for this 70th looked promising around Christmas last with a peak of 46 booked or expressing serious interest, in reality I counted 26 people on site mostly from the BMW club and a few from UKGSER, the difference between the numbers were in the main caused by the site and ferries getting booked up early for this big event also the financial climate recently may have had an impact
In better times the 65th Anniversary attracted over 60 onsite!

On with the report,
I decided to go down to Dover the day before sailing and get a B&B, just as well because the battery failed on the way down (ABS lights wouldn’t go out duff cell) and I had time to divert to Sawbridgeworth BMW who fitted a new battery and all was well.

Next day I met a few riders on the dock and we had a good crossing and ride down to the site in Normandy.
Some people were already there and a good 1st night in the bar was had, over the next couple of days people did there own trips and visited all the main areas, it was obviously far busier in Normandy than any previous trips
One of our participants got the worst call from BMW telling him not to ride his new R1200RT any more and it would be collected from the site for return to the UK this happened the next day and he found himself the proud driver of a 3cyl diesel car not how thought he would see Normandy I’m sure!
Sunday the 8th we had an organised ride to see the massed parachute drop of 700 parachutists from many different nations a true spectacle, but with I estimate 200 thousand people watching, we had to park about 1 ½ Km away and walk in, hard work in the heat!
For me the trip ended on Monday night with a few drinks in the Bar and then a bit of a gathering back at on of the chalets, next day I was off at 6.30am to catch the ferry home.
