I've been puzzelling recently over the goo (emulsified oil) emmitting from my crankcase breather pipe...

It transpires (with RCmad's assistance and stripping down of his own bike...thank you very much sir) that the breather has been disconnected from th airbox, and the hole was taped up... see piccy here...(hole marked "A" is the guilty party)

Does anyone know if this is a common airbox mod? I've had a look on Chain Gang, but not found anything yet)

The air box has another hole (B) with a grommet through it...but nothing passing through the grommet...should there be something there?

The Dak has run just fine n dandy like this since May when I bought it...

Recently, tho, the idle speed has increased from 1500 to close to 2000rpm...it would kake sense that the breather could have something to do with this issue...but it ran fine before (still runs fine now...just idle is high) :nenau Speedo sensor appears to have blown...could be something to di with the fast idle?

Are there any techy's out there who know anything about such things? If so, I'd love to hear from you...

Hi, I just put something on you other post. Have a look there also.

Hole 'B' is the fixing point for your oil tank. You should have a long bolt with a spacer attaching the oil tank to the air box. This is done with the aid of a knurled brass Collete that fits in the grommet you have marked 'B' therefore supporting the upper part of the oil tank.

It's not a huge problem if it's not there, it just offers a bit of support to between the air box ans the oil tank.

I think it's been mentioned before too, that replacing the speedo sensor will likely cure your tickover issue.

I have (amongst our three 650GSs) got a 2000 Dakar. This has had a mod where-by the tickover is kept high by the speedo sensor while the bike is in motion. Once stopped it then drops to normal. In my case this was a BW update on the very early Dakars to cure a stalling issue. our 2001 and 2004 gs's don't have this mod.

Val.

i had a look on there as well, no info, don't think it's a mod, think val has it spot on in the other thread. Hole b should have a threaded insert for connecting to the oil tank. Is it still attached to the oil tank by any chance? (top right of oil tank closest to the seat)

Rubber Grommet/Insert Pulled Out of or Rotates in the Airbox?

* Typical Problem: I changed the oil in my 2001 Dakar this weekend. All went well enough, but I found that the rubber grommet in the airbox that the oil tank is tightened with had been torn, apparently during a previous oil change. The grommet actually slipped back into the airbox. Fortunately, the bolt was partially inside the grommet, but I had a terrible time getting the rubber grommet back in place in order to properly tighten the oil tank. Question--How easy is it to replace this grommet with the threaded brass insert? I assume that it would involve removing the snorkel and reaching inside the airbox.
* Solution 1: I replaced mine after a hard left-side fall that caused the grommet to rip out. You have to have one hand up inside the air box just to make sure you don't drop anything down the intake that sits directly below this nut/grommet assembly. Better yet put a small cloth over the intake while you are working. IMHO this grommet is a very poor design. With just the two lugs on the bottom of the oil tank and this flimsy grommet on top, any hard fall on the left side of the bike will break the lugs off of the oil tank. Just one of the reasons I stopped treating this bike like a dirt bike (I love this bike and I want it to last and be in good shape and not have all these bent/broken/welded parts).
* Solution 2: I used some black RTV sealant to seal the grommet in place. It both seals and will keep it secure when the bolt is removed for future maintenance.

Doh :blast beaten too it :D

Hi guys...

Yup...the oil tank has the screw...I did think it may be something like that...but decided to give up till tomorrow to check...you guys just got me off me a*se and back in the garage...

I think you're right...the grommet just broke, or the box filled with oil at some time.

I think I'll leave the bike OTR till the weekend and and do all the servicing and that then...cor...I could even wake Liverpool, by riding the XR to work!

Anyways...thanks much for your time and knowledge everyone...
