Greetings,
I am after any help/advice on my 2001 650, after an emotional ride to Bristol Hospital (following blue light ambulance with my day old baby daughter on board) I returned back to Cheltenham (daughter ok) in the pouring rain. Just as I pulling into the hospital my bike started to stall at lights and needed extra revs to pull away, the throttle didn't seem to respond very well. I initailly thought it was bad fuel, but a fresh tank full changed nothing.
A week or so later and no change I decided to investigate (I am a total bike repair novice) thinking it may be a filter problem, on looking inside the airfilter was discoloured half way up (grey) and after pulling it out there was a gunky brown liquid below it (dirty oil?). I have cleaned the filter with white spirits, I also removed the airbox and cleaned that out too. The plastic conector on the larger of the two pipes is now a little worse for wear, where can I buy a replacement and what is it called/part number? Is the dirty air filter the probable cause? As well as the poor seal on my damaged pipe?
Thanks for any help you can give...

This site will help you find the correct part number.
Try your local BMW dealer or Motorworks to get the bits.

As to the stalling issue, try disconnecting the battery and then making sure the terminals are tight afterwards. The 650GS seems to suffer from this problem quite a lot (mine does) with no definite fix apparent.
The Chain Gang FAQs will provide plenty of reading to enlighten and confuse you.

Glad the little girl is OK. :thumb2

Can't help with the bike problem, but glad your little girl is ok. Best wishes to all three of you.

Many Thanks...

Many thanks for the responses, found the part I managed to break whilst disassembling the air box on the website you mentioned, when I've put it all back together i'll try the battery trick :)

Thanks again

Kristian

On the money...

Adrian, your thread is right on the money, but i'm afraid your level of repair is a tad out of my league! I will ring motorworks and try get the rubber seal thingy and hopefully fit it myself.

Would the rotted conector account for the splutter/stale on the bike? Also, where did the oily liquid in the recess below my air filter come from? Is that a sign of another problem?

Many Thanks

The air box should have a pipe that goes down to under the bike, some ppl keep that rubber bug on it if you take it off you may find gunk/slug it is all old dirty air/condensation if never removed, i removed mine off my bike after day 1 as when it gos in for services most mechanic forget!
you might want to think about fitting a K & N permanent air filter, so you only have to clean it every so often that get screwed for a new 1 on the services
