Dakar or not to dakar?

Ok folks,

I am in the market for either a standatd GS or a dakar. My question is do i go for a newer lower mileage GS or an older higher mileage Dakar? I intend to take it across the states in a year or so so want somthing that will last and complete the trip trouble free. i doubt i will be doing any extreme offroading but maybe the odd off piste excursion.

Any thought, views or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
