Off to the seaside tomorrow and while perusing the atlas I noticed a forest drive and toll road through Dalby forest.
However, I cant find, despite googles best efforts, if it is open to motorbikes.
Ive tried to ring the visitors centre but got an answer phone.
Does anybody know if it is infact open to bikes?
Just looked like an interesting way to get to Scarborough.
And while your at it, last time I went to Whitby on the bike you could park them by the band stand on the harbour wall while you ate your chips,
can you still do that?
Paul.

It should be open.
Dalby Forest
Motorcycles £2.00
I've been cycling there but never driven all the way through but I'm sure you can. Just depends if you want to pay for it & watch out for cyclists!

They're definitely cracking down on parking in Whitby. You can park outside the Whistlestop cafe if you're a customer & I've parked on the grass on the top car park near the Abbey.
Here's a list of motorcycle bays from Scarb'gh council but it's not clear whether they're free or not.

Dont think Ive ever been through on bike but nice place call at the "Moor cock inn" at the scarboro end of the drive :D:beer:PS think after a certain time they close the booths I have had a free drive through in the past

Do I need a Residents Parking Permit if I ride a Motorcycle? No. Motorcyclists are entitled to free and unlimited parking in all shared permit/ pay and display bays. Motorcyclists are not able to park in loading bays, disabled bays, on double yellow lines, taxi ranks, bus stops or resident’s only streets.

You can ride through Dalby Forest. But it is a conifer plantation, nothing to see and the road is only about 5 miles long with 3 corners. Max safe speed 25-30mph, as there are cyclists everywhere. Avoid.

The Dalby forest drive is 8.5 miles long and is intended more for days out than an interesting ride through. Its sometimes free (well there is an honesty box) in off peak times.

Two other very interesting routes run parallel - One starts at Saninton and runs between Dalby and Wykeham forests to Hacknes - 7 miles. The other runs from Snape in Cropton forest to Grosmont and has a good variety of bumpy roads and scenery. Unfortunately the old Cropton forest drive has just been closed to traffic.
Whichever route you take its a great day out, study an OS map, or pre-view on google earth and go explore.

I rode through years ago - pleasant drive with a nice cream tea available at the farmhouse about mid-way

Just looked at Elles Scarborough council parking web site.

Motorcycle Parking

"Motorcycles are exempt from on street and off street pay and display charges.

Where appropriate motorcyclists should aim to park within designated motorcycle bays, however where this is not possible, motorcycles can park within a normal pay and display bay.

Motorcycles are exempt from time restrictions within disc zone bays. Please note that motorcycles are not exempt from restrictions within time limit bays, e.g 40 minute bays or one hour bays."

That's something I did not know. Anybody tried just leaving their bike in a pay and display bay?

Twice a year the Auto66 club get part of Dalby Forest Drive shut and we get to race motorbikes one way up twisty sections:thumb2

On one part "Dalby South" there is a 'jump' on a slight bend and the big bikes are pulling wheelies at over 120mph while slightly leaning. It's quite exciting!

"Dalby South" Not a big wheelie, but a big thrill 'cos of the speed and how narrow it all seems when flat out…

Dalby North is fun too, on Olde Bonnies and even a GS!

So if you can't park within the free zone outside the Whistlestop cafe as a customer & the motorcycle bay within that car park is full, then I can park for free in a spare car space? What happens, if 30 minutes later, there are several spaces available in the motorcycle bay when the warden comes round? Should I take photo's of evidence that it was full at the time I parked?

Why are we exempt from paying? Is it because some scrote would most likely nick the ticket from the bike, wherever we chose to stick it?
I'm guessing it's probably easier for the councils to exempt us than have loads of bikers challenging the penalties.

I don't know Elle, I have never come across this before, I am a real worrier when it comes to parking as I see every penny spent on fees or fines such a waste. I would like to hear from anybody who has applied this rule and had a successful dispute with the parking wardens.

I have tried to find a similar statement from other councils.

This is from Blackpool.
"Motorcycle bays are available on most Blackpool Council owned car parks. Motorcycles may use these bays free of charge. Please do not occupy a Disabled Person’s bay (outlined in yellow). If you choose to park in a bay other than for motorcycles you will need to buy a Pay and Display ticket. Do not leave this ticket on the motorcycle, take it with you, we will need to see it if you get issued with a Penalty Charge Notice. Park legally and enjoy your visit."

Rydale Council
"Each motorcycle must pay and display a valid ticket or permit.
Motorcycles may park in any car park but each vehicle must display a valid ticket or permit, no matter how many vehicles may be using one space."

Tight sods, bet not many people know this-

"A separate pay and display ticket is required for a trailer or caravan."

I have given up looking now, every district has different rules. Total confusion.

I avoid places where it's not clear about motorcycle parking. 2-3 yrs ago had the same issue in Matlock Bath - the warden told us to take the ticket with us but I don't want the hassle of a debate in the first place!
If 1 bike took up a single car space I'm sure they'd be totally naffed off if there weren't any spaces left.
No longer stop in Helmsley for the parking issue.
Sorry for taking over this thread :)

There are quite a few places like that Milton Keynes is the same for all the coloured bays. Free to park a bike in.

OP....Dalby forest will be open and quite possibly free.....the ‘Pay Here’ kiosk is regularly left unmanned....just ride straight through.

Real world parking (for a motorbike) is no problem in Scarborough. There is a free motorcycle parking area at the end of the Marine Drive (near the little fun fair jetty ...you really can’t miss it) If that park is full you can just park next to it along the sea wall....common practise, never had a problem.

Can't really advise on parking in Whitby.

Advice...Really really watch your speed round here. The coppers are actually pretty good, but don’t push it.....marked and unmarked cars/vans on all roads into Scarborough.

Enjoy....:thumb2

Ok, We went through the forest yesterday and very pleasant it was too.
Made for a nice change, would have preferred it to have been a dirt road as in the Kielder forest drive.
As for the parking, we by-passed Scarborough and went to Whitby instead.
Parked next to the old band stand next to the ramp down to the beech.
There is a sign saying no motorbike parking and directing you up the hill to free parking.
Naughtily we ignored it and parked anyway, as did three others who parked next to us.
Sayed just long enough to eat fish and chips. Nobody batted an eyelid.
However, there is also a sign saying that there is no access along the harbour after 23 March through to September.
