So, the plan was to take the tank off and do a little "wiring" work into the ignition. "It'll only take 5 minutes" WRONG!!

The first QD disconnected a treat but the second was a little reluctant. Apply a bit more pressure and, voila, petrol p*ssing everywhere.

It would appear the male connector has snapped off in the female bit. I've retrieved the snapped off bit and the female side is OK. Phoned SPC, one male bit in stock. Now in an envelope on it's way, should be here in the morning.

How the f*ck does the BWM version of the "tried and tested" jubilee clip loosen and what's that second collar all about? Do I squeeze it, widen it, coax it down?????

Pic attached, guidance required.

Thanks in advance.

These are one-time clips that I usually open with careful use of a Junior Hacksaw!

Did you get Miles to send you a new clip too?

You could try opening the clip with some expanding circlip pliers or a pointy tool like a screwdriver, but you risk pulling at the remains of the fuel pipe. At this stage, the worst thing that you could do would be to snap the plastic pipe at the other end of the fuel pipe! I'd go for the hacksaw option unless you have a hefty pair of cutters that would slice through the clip sideways. Take your time - don't get this bit wrong or damage the rubber pipe or else you'll have to take the other end off too!

Some guys use Jubilee-type clips for replacements here - although I prefer the standard item - it's fit and forget (provided that you don't snap the QD!).

Thanks for that. Miles didn't mention the clips were one-time use only so there won't be one in the post.

I found a way of getting the clip down the pipe. A couple of long nose pliers to straighten the kinks in the clip and there's enough (just) slack in it to slide it down. The sticking point then was getting the broken bit out of the pipe without breaking the other end.

I'm thinking it may be possible to re-use the clip by compressing the edges again. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the help.

Mucky,

If it makes you feel any better, thats exactly what happened to Fanum and myself on Saturday, with a nearly full big Adventure Tank, unfortunatly, it wasn't quite as full by the time we stopped the fuel pissing out...still my floors nice and clean now :D

The clips are called " Dog ear " or " Otika clips " as used by most automotve manufactures. The best way to remove them is with a set of end snip pliers,[Nail pliers], don't try & get it off in one bite just nibble at it, there are long handle nail pliers I saw for sale in my local B&Q superstore the other day. you can use these to set [close] the new clips.

LOL.....i was getting Deja-vu when I read that.......

If the plastic end is still in the petrol pipe Mucky, we only managed to get mine out by crushing the fekker with a pair of pliers and pulling the fragments out.

Working the new one back in is a bastard job too.......unless some bright spark here knows if the '04 versions are bigger bore than the 100 QD size...in which case that'd explain it :D

We tried all the things we could think of.......even sticking the pipe in near boiling hot water didn't loosen it enough to get the end any further in the tube...but although it didnt go right in, it was far enough up to get a pair of mole grips onto the clippy thing to squeeze it up...and it hasnt leaked since.

QD pipes seem a great idea but the weakest part is certainly the plastic tube bits...they seem to be very brittle as we've found out here.....

:beerjug:

I don't feel so bad now..

I also have a very clean garage floor and r/h pot! Looks like we're not the only ones who've done this recently as SPC said they sold a few on Saturday. Hence only one left.

Mind you, I only had four bars worth of fuel in the tank, less now but probably not as stressful as Rob and Fanum's experience.

I got the broken part out of the pipe by using some very old fashioned wire strippers and anchoring the right angle fuel pipe. Long long jaws and adjusting screw - I always knew they'd come in handy one day. Bless the National Grid stores at Littlebrook D.

So, by the sounds of it, fun and games trying to fit the new one in the morning - pass me the lubricant. I shall keep you posted.

Thanks to all for comments and suggestions.

Does anyone know how to get rid of that petrol smell that's wafting through the house?

Fixed!

New bit arrived from SPC - fitted with no problems whatsoever.

The new plug is a different size to the old one and slipped into the hose with the minimum of effort. I've sort of re-tightened the clip and all seems fine. The fuel is pumping through with no sign of a leak.

I got Rob's light kit today but not fitting it until I have the bar powder coated so will be very careful when taking the tank off again!

Thanks all for the help.

There's our answer Rob....the bastards have changed the size!!!!

If it went in that easy Mucky, it may be worth keeping an eye on it.....the one from Rob's 1100 was a bigger size from the sounds of it.....you might have a smaller sized one or a bigger pipe???

Bill,

Your main plugs were black and the one connecting the balance pipe was white. The white QDs are obviously for smaller pipe size than the black ones. The replacement I got on Monday was black just like the original.

It could be that Muckys was actually for the balance pipe instead of the main fuel pipe. What colour is it Mucky?

Glad you got your package, the bloody post office is all over the place. Alex B's took 5 days, Yours took 4 but Guitarmans arrived next day

Not white...

Rob

The new connector was black and looked identical to what came out. Apart from the broken bit that is :D

The part number on the invoice is: MC13.31.7.659.119

I'll keep my eye on it over the next few days and report back if there's a leak.

No worries on package - it all looks good but the bar really needs to be black - hence the powder coat.

Thanks all

David
