Hey guys,
have you ever noticed if you leave the 12GS out in the sun, or if it is just hot whilst riding, the RID goes very dark. To the point I cant read it.
I know some LCD's dont like being out in the sun/heat, but I thought this was overcome with other devices.
I cant believe the Barons of Baveria have stumbled on this!
Comments.

Spot the obvious mistake:- 'Location: Australia'

Another one rubbing it in.

My garage probably gets to 40c on a hot day in the uk, and it's never gone black.

Not noticed that here in Blighty - Usually it becomes hard to read due to mud and shite on the cover - or snow

"Sun", "heat", "hot whilst riding". Hmmmmmmm.

As the 5th layer went on this morning, the ligibility of my LCD screen was not uppermost in my mind.

The layer of frost under the fog-laden sky that I could see though my salt-encrusted visor on the M25 was quite pretty though. ;)

Sorry guys, it wasnt meant to be a wind up. I thought during your summer..............whilst abroad or something.....where it does get hot....someone might have noticed.

Not wearing polarized sunnies. This occurs just when leaving the bike in direct sun too. Not hot here yet, supposed to crack 33 deg C, pretty mild........................ooops there I go again (I like the cold.....really I do!)

Thanks for the replies,

Gonz.

Never noticed it to be honest - as mentioned before polarising sunglasses make it look blotchy

Gonz where in Aus are you ? summer seems late arriving this year, its currently about 10 degrees cooler than it is normally this time of year

Instrument LCD going dark in sun problem seems to vary between bikes. On our trip across from Western Australia to New South Wales to the BMW GS Safari, Nigel's 1200's LCD was generally unreadable by lunchtime on a warm day, but I only suffered it a couple of times on really hot days on my bike.

I havent noticed yet (in garage 99.9% of time) I mite need you to show me what you are talking about.

Certainly. You can bring it around any time this month, or the next two. Or Gasgoyne Junction Western Australia August 2006. Or Morocco 2007 (your buying)?

It is a function of the Liquid Crystal Display. They also change their contrast ration with temperature unless external compensation has been applied. And of course as different bikes behave differently so do different LCDs.

It happens when the unit is exposed to direct and prolonged sunlight.
The speedo needle can stick too....doen't happen a lot here.
Noticed it on various bikes in Greece (FJ1200) and 1200GS in Romania and Eastern Europe.

.........and for our Northern European GSers - The LCD dispaly goes "a bit funny" when the temperature drops below 0C - Wind-chill contributes too..

The LCD display in my car goes screwy on hot days, but I cant say that my 1150 RID has ever thrown a woble hot or cold .

For what it is worth - I lost my RID temporarily last week during torrential rain - and I live in Oz FFS.
Definitely fades in the sun too
