Are these 'action cams' the same thing as the dash cam type?

I want some kind of mounted (hidden) camera front and rear for evidence gathering, not making you tube videos of my ride. I am confused by the whole gamut of stuff out there, which is a minefield for an old duffer like what I am. Especially when it comes to wiring it in, because electrics are just coloured spaghetti to me.

Chigee AIO-6 with mounted front and rear cams. Probably best to get soemone to fit them for you. Pretty small cams and work quite well.
I have a few mates that have them.

In short no they're not. Get a dedicated bike cam as the action ones are stand alone and run off a battery so you have to remember to take it with you remove it if you leave your bike and charge the batteries (which sods law will make sure run out just before you need the footage) and turn it on and off which happens automatically on the bike cams plus the action ones are easily nickname if you forget to take it off and leave your bike somewhere. You can get just a bike cam or ones that are part of a TFT package that includes front and rear bike cams, TPMS, a satnav and stuff like apple car play and android auto. Make sure what ever you get is a dedicated waterproof bike version.

Have a look at Innov, but be prepared to pay over £200 for just dash cams. Wiring is easy, have installed on many bikes. K7 is the latest one, but you maybe able to pickup a K3 used on eBay, that is the ones I had on my bikes and they are fine for evidence gathering etc.

The issue is if you have more than one bike, they are hardwired. I have gone back to using a helmet cam, which I have mounted on a ball wing mirror mount and just swap between bikes. Yes it's battery operated, but it lasts for 6 hours before it needs charging. You also have to remove if you leave the bike for any time. Mine is a drift, you can still buy them, but Drift doesn't seem to be building any new models, so the tech is about 4 years old and their support is pants. Think they are just selling old stock from a warehouse in Hong Kong via a UK subsidiary. Even a Drift helmet cam, which is only front facing will cost you over £100.

Thanks for the info. I have a video camera (Garmin, the white one) that I can put on a helmet strap, but it is a bit vulnerable. It's OK, but not ideal, it does have built in GPS though so speed is ingrained into the footage. I might start using it a bit more! I shall have a look at Innov for the V-Strom, which is the main bike. The classics I shall start using the helmet one again. Thanks for reminding me.

Got mine off Ali express. About £120 all in for front and rear with Bluetooth connection for downloading the footage, just in case. It also has a recording if disturbed function.

As said - some action cams can be used as dash cams. They ideally need to have loop recording (overwriting the oldest files) and external power (so you don’t have to remember to charge them). Some will overheat and shut down if they’re recording but you’re not moving much.

If you’re tempted by one of the CarPlay-with-camera options such as Chigee/Aocci/etc then you have to leave the head unit on the bike (eg if you want it to record if someone fiddles with your bike when it’s parked up overnight).

He admits he's a bit of a luddite so the system needs to be as simple as possible.
Simon if you go for one of these Chinese systems you can use the cameras and TPMS without anything else for as little as £50-60 and not worry about additional navigation.
If you let us know what phone you have we can advise on if it's compatible for using navigation, personally in your case I wouldn't worry about it.

I do have a Zumo XT too, but other than putting in one postcode at a time, it is of limited value. Wapping sent me instructions on how to put in a second postcode etc.... I wrote the instructions down and tried to follow them, it was all a bit involved and I have reverted to plan A.



This is just for having some footage of scrotage on the road if ever I need it.

The XT is a very capable device, you can send routes to it to follow and use Garmin Drive to locate places and send to the device. But if a tank bag and paper works, stick with it.

I have just fitted an Innov K6 to the scoot, it is more than adequate. the single (front) Camera is well under £200 and the film quality is spot on.

As others have said, any of the Innov Dashcam range will do the job.
The K6 is the simplest to install, it has one 2k and one 1080p camera. I don't think it has GPS, if not it won't record speed and position, which can be useful evidence if a claim is challenged, but then it depends if you are an habitual speeder!

I have the K7 on mine, it has two 2k cameras, GPS, and a control panel that allows you to take snap shots and store current recording to a folder that won't be over written. It also starts recording if someone knocks the bike or tries to move it whilst parks up. it also has a separate recorder unit, so it's more bits to hook-up but It's not too difficult to install. If you lived nearer to me I'd do it for you!

The K5 appears to be similar, fuctionality wise, to the K7 but it has one 4k camera and one 1080p camera, and a control panel similar to the K7. The recorder/SD memory card is in one of the cameras (I think), so a little easier to install than the K7.

Reasonably easy to fit as it has colour coded plugs just need a switched live which is probably the hardest to sort. I fitted one a couple of Mths ago and it seems to work very well.
Just fit and forget until something happens!

The reason I use my tank notes is because I cannot work out how to do download things. Computer stuff does not fit with how my brain functions, I just don't seem to be able ot comprehend how things work. I tried a fancy phone and OSMAND system, got a dedicated phone to do it with... I could not work it out and several people tried to show me in person, but they couldn't get me to understand either. I think because people automatically assume you are starting from a higher level of starting point than I am at.

If you are not “ into wiring “ - might I suggest you acquire a Healtech Thunderbox , it’s a very clever little box , which you connect + and - to the battery ,, it has 2 connector blocks on it to connect stuff onto 1 + and one - ,
It comes live only after the motor starts , and stops shortly after the motor is turned of .
It’s a really easy solution for putting on extra circuits that are completely outside the bikes own wiring .

Simon I have the Innovv front and rear fit and forget acces video footage via phone or remove SD card and liad into the computer. I had it for commuting to work and it was faultless and brillant at night. Think it was the K6 as it is smaller more compact than the K7. If you have a Hexezcan like i do it is plug and play otjerwise tap into switched life
