Having bought another bike without the additional computer I know realise there would be a couple of items which I now think I would like.
Namely a gear indicator. Has anyone ever fitted one to other bikes and would the Datatool one be suitable for the F800 ?

I have a mate who fitted one to a Kawasaki Versys. The fitting was straight forward and uncomplicated. The actual digital display was neat and was easily accommodated just beneath the clocks in a clearly visible place.
The Versys is as far as I'm aware, a conventionally wired bike rather than a canbus system: I don't know if that fact would make a difference. One would think that Datatool would be able to provide technical help if you were to contact them.

Prolbley missing somethings here but isn't there a gear indaciator as standard? My F800GSA has one and so did my ST. JJH

My 2015 F800GS Adv purchased without the computer has no gear indicator. I don't believe you can retro fit a computer and I also understand there's a mechanism inside the gear box present on the computer bikes but lacking on the non-computer bikes that provides a trigger for the computer.

Wiring harnesses are the same for models with or without the computer except the ones with ESA

The clocks with the computer are the same across a lot of the F800 range I think it will be a fit clocks and program retrofit

It would not surprise me if the LCD is the same on computer and non computer clocks but with different software and half the screen covered by the trim in the front of the clocks?

Sorry. I thought they all had it. Jjh

Thanks for your research Steve, looks interesting. I will have a look at the panel on mine.
Thanks again.

If you use realoem website you can cross reference the part numbers and see what is different but with canbus I think most of the differences are coding than hardware the only difference I can see is adding the sensor for outside temperature but I would imagine its all prewired as they want it as easy as possible on the production line in the factory.

I do quite a lot of programming in fault finding and retro fit on BMW cars and the hardware is the easy part to add its the coding that takes the time and effort I would imagine the two sides of the business work very similar

Deleted account 181015003, I finally got round to investigating the computer module on my bike and yes you are correct, underneath the clock surrounded panel is the full computer screen. So the 64,000 $ question is how do I set about updating the software to energise the whole screen and info ? Realise some sensors may be required for certain of the readings but what else?
I have found supplier for a new front bezel £45 or can I carefully cut the blanking part off?

I would imagine it will be a dealer coding job it would be interesting swapping the clocks to one with a computer just to see what happens and if the bike or the clocks hold the software that determines the display

Steve, I think it would be a brave person to volunteer to loan their instrument module for testing.
I think my choice is to buy the computer set up and try it !
Decisions decisions!!

Don't think the bike clocks hold anything. I rode mine sans clocks for a bit (don't ask) and the mileage still went up. Also the spate of clocks thefts would point to this being a plug and play part. The clocks do hold the time / trip meter info as when unplugged this resets. Having had the potentiometer / gear indicator replaced I know it definitely indicates neutral as when it fails you no longer get that light on the dash but i don't know whether it is how the currently selected gear is fed back to the canbus. Also if you unplug the potentiometer for any reason it needs a dealer reset.

Best,

S

If you were nearer you could try mine the worst that would happen is the clocks would not work and a fault would log on the ECU a GS-911 would soon clear any fault

I have the programs and leads to do the BMW cars but the bikes are a different set up and its a dealer only I think maybe some independent specialists might also have the gear to code them
