Okay then, now I've gone out and got myself a decent PC how do I go about transfering the data (j.pegs, MPEG's etc) from my old PC (Hewlett Packard Pentium II 300Hz 64 Mb RAM) with Win 98 to my new PC (Dell Pentium IIII 3,2 GHz 1024 Mb SD RAM) with Win XP?
The HP has a 3" Floppy drive a CD writer and two USB 1.1 ports, the Dell has no Floppy, a DVD writer and at least six USB 2.0 ports.
So how do I best go about the transfer please?

Thanks in advance.

John

Depends how much data you're talking about. If it's only two or three CD's worth, burn it on to CD and copy across. Even better if you've got re-writeable CDs.

If it's several GBs worth, I'd take the hard drive out of the old PC, change the jumpers to make it a slave and put it in the new PC, transfer the data to the newer drive, and then remove.

As the old PC is now pretty worthless, you could even leave the hard drive in the new PC, deleting all the system files etc.

Or, if it's mostly pix and small files, stick 'em on a Flash Drive (removeable storage device) and move them across that way. Buy a biggish capacity drive, at least 128 Mb

As long as both PC’s use the same type of drive , EDI or scussi, you might get away with removing the old hard drive and dropping it into the new Dell, you should see a spare slot for it, plus a power plug and spare plug on the cable that goes to the master drive. You will have to move a very small connector jack to make the old drive a Slave unit, normally there is a tiny diagram on the side of the drive.

When you boot up XP should spot the additional drive and map it as an E drive or something similar.

Then simply use Windows Explorer to move the files to their new location.
